Description
Struthanthus acostensis (also called Acosta's Struthanthus, among many other common names) is an evergreen shrub native to tropical and subtropical regions of Central and South America. It typically grows in moist, well-drained soils in open woodlands and scrublands.
Uses & Benefits
Struthanthus acostensis is a popular garden plant due to its showy purple flowers. It can be used as a groundcover in sunny areas, and its flowers can be used to make a tea that is said to have anti-inflammatory properties.
Flower, Seeds and Seedlings
Struthanthus acostensis has small, white flowers that are clustered in the leaf axils. The seeds are small, black and shiny. The seedlings are small and delicate.
Cultivation and Propagation
Struthanthus acostensis is a fast-growing, evergreen shrub that can reach up to 3 m (10 ft) in height. It prefers full sun and well-drained soil. Propagation is best done by cuttings taken in late spring or early summer. Cuttings should be taken from the tips of the branches and planted in a mixture of sand and peat moss. Keep the cuttings moist and in a warm, bright location until they have rooted.
