Description
Mentzelia heterosepala (also called Heterosepalous Blazingstar, among many other common names) is an annual herb native to South America. It grows up to 1 m tall and has leaves that are ovate-lanceolate, with a pointed tip, and are up to 8 cm long. It is found in dry forests, scrublands, and rocky areas in Argentina, Bolivia, Paraguay, and Uruguay.
Uses & Benefits
Mentzelia heterosepala is used in traditional Chinese medicine for treating fever, malaria, and dysentery. It is also used as an ornamental plant in gardens.
Cultivation and Propagation
Mentzelia heterosepala is propagated by division or by seed. Division should be done in the spring, when the plant is actively growing. Seeds should be sown in the spring in a cold frame. When they are large enough to handle, prick the seedlings out into individual pots and plant them out in the summer.
