Description
Scutellaria inflata (also called inflated skullcap, among many other common names) is a perennial herbaceous plant native to North America. It has a woody stem, and its leaves are simple, opposite, and lance-shaped. It grows in moist, shady areas, such as woodlands, meadows, and stream banks.
Flower, Seeds and Seedlings
The flower of Scutellaria inflata is a small, pale blue or white, two-lipped corolla with a short tube and four lobes. The seed is a small, black, oval-shaped nutlet. The seedlings are small, with a single pair of opposite leaves.
Cultivation and Propagation
Scutellaria inflata can be propagated by seed or division. Seeds should be sown in spring or autumn in a cold frame. When they are large enough to handle, prick the seedlings out into individual pots and plant them out in the summer. Division in spring or autumn. Larger divisions can be planted out direct into their permanent positions. We have found that it is best to pot up the smaller divisions and grow them on in light shade in a cold frame until they are established before planting them out in late spring or early summer.
