It has a woody stem, and its leaves are simple, opposite, and lance-shaped. It grows in moist, shady areas, such as woodlands, meadows, and stream banks.
Uses & Benefits
Scutellaria immaculata is used in traditional Chinese medicine to treat fever, headache, and sore throat. It is also used as an ornamental plant for its attractive foliage and flowers.
Flower, Seeds and Seedlings
The flower of Scutellaria immaculata is blue-purple in color and has a diameter of about 1 cm. The seed is small, round and black. The seedlings are about 10 cm tall and have multiple stems with small, oval-shaped leaves.
Cultivation and Propagation
Scutellaria immaculata can be propagated by seed or division. Seeds should be sown in spring or autumn in a cold frame. When they are large enough to handle, prick the seedlings out into individual pots and plant them out in the summer. Division in spring or autumn. Larger divisions can be planted out direct into their permanent positions. We have found that it is best to pot up the smaller divisions and grow them on in light shade in a cold frame until they are established before planting them out in late spring or early summer.
