Description
Glechoma hirsuta (also called Hairy Glechoma, among many other common names) is a perennial herb or subshrub that grows up to 0.5 m tall. It is native to South America and is found in dry or rocky habitats.
Uses & Benefits
Glechoma hirsuta is used in traditional medicine for treating fever, rheumatism, and skin diseases. It is also used as a food preservative and as an insect repellent.
Flower, Seeds and Seedlings
Glechoma hirsuta has small white flowers with four petals and four sepals. Its seeds are small, round, and black. Its seedlings have two opposite leaves.
Cultivation and Propagation
Glechoma hirsuta can be propagated by seed or division. Seeds should be sown in spring in a cold frame. When they are large enough to handle, prick the seedlings out into individual pots and plant them out in the summer. Division can be done in spring or autumn. Larger clumps can be replanted direct into their permanent positions, though it is best to pot up smaller clumps and grow them on in a cold frame until they are rooting well. Plant them out in the spring.
Where to Find Glechoma hirsuta
