Description
Hypoxis lejolyana (also called Star-grass, among many other common names) is a perennial herb that grows up to 30 cm tall. It has narrow, grass-like leaves and small, yellow flowers. It is native to the southeastern United States, from Virginia to Florida, and is found in wet meadows, swamps and other wet areas.
Uses & Benefits
Hypoxis lejolyana is used as an ornamental plant in gardens and is also used for medicinal purposes, such as to treat urinary tract infections and to reduce inflammation.

Hypoxis lejolyana has yellow flowers with six petals and yellow stamens. The seeds are small, black and oval. The seedlings are small, with a single pair of leaves.
Cultivation and Propagation
Hypoxis lejolyana is a low-growing, spreading perennial that is native to moist areas of Europe and North America. It can be propagated by seed or division. Seeds should be sown in spring in a cold frame or in a sheltered spot outdoors. When they are large enough to handle, prick the seedlings out into individual pots and grow them on in the greenhouse for their first winter. Plant them out into their permanent positions in late spring or early summer, after the last expected frosts. Division in spring or autumn.
