Description
Vicia ervilia (also called 'Vetch', among many other common names) is an annual herb with a single stem and a climbing habit. It is native to the Mediterranean and grows in moist, well-drained soils.
Uses & Benefits
Vicia ervilia is used as a food crop and for animal feed. It is also used as an ornamental plant in gardens and parks.
Flower, Seeds and Seedlings
Vicia ervilia has small, purple flowers with four petals and a yellow center. The seed is small, round, and black. The seedlings are thin and delicate.
Cultivation and Propagation
Vicia ervilia is an annual plant that can be grown from seed. It prefers full sun and well-drained soil and is tolerant of drought. Propagation is by seed, which should be sown in early spring in a cold frame. When they are large enough to handle, prick the seedlings out into individual pots and grow them on in the greenhouse for at least their first winter. Plant them out into their permanent positions in late spring or early summer, after the last expected frosts.
