Description
Acalypha deamii (also called Deam's copperleaf, among many other common names) is a small shrub native to the Caribbean, Central America, and South America. It is a perennial evergreen shrub that grows up to 1.5 m in height. It has ovate to oblong-ovate leaves, which are usually green but may be reddish or purplish. The flowers are small and inconspicuous, and the fruit is a small capsule containing several seeds. It is found in open areas, such as roadsides, pastures, and disturbed areas.
Flower, Seeds and Seedlings
Acalypha deamii has small, greenish-white flowers that are arranged in a spike-like inflorescence. The seed is a small, dark brown caryopsis with a thin, membranous pericarp. The seedlings are small and delicate, with long, slender leaves.
Cultivation and Propagation
Acalypha deamii can be propagated from seed or cuttings. Seeds should be sown in a well-drained soil mix and kept moist. Cuttings should be taken from healthy plants and planted in a moist soil mix. Both methods should be kept in a warm, sunny location and watered regularly.
