Description
Carex shandanica (also called Shandan sedge, among many other common names) is a perennial, rhizomatous sedge native to China. It has a clump-forming habit, with erect stems that reach up to 40 cm in height. Its leaves are linear, and its inflorescence is a dense, cylindrical spike. It grows in moist to wet soils in grasslands, meadows, and along streams and lakes.
Flower, Seeds and Seedlings
Carex shandanica has small, yellow-green flowers that are packed in dense spikes. The seeds are small, black, and triangular in shape. The seedlings are slender and green with a single seed leaf.
Cultivation and Propagation
Carex shandanica can be propagated by division or seed. It prefers moist, humus-rich, well-drained soils in part shade. It is tolerant of a wide range of soil pH and can tolerate drought.
