Description
Carex gayana (also called Gayana Sedge, among many other common names) is a perennial sedge of the family Cyperaceae. It is native to South America, where it is widely distributed in Argentina, Brazil, and Uruguay. It is found in wetland habitats, such as marshes, swamps, and wet meadows.

Carex gayana has small, greenish-brown flowers that are borne in a dense spike. The seeds are small, dark brown, and oblong. The seedlings are small and slender.
Cultivation and Propagation
Carex gayana is a perennial sedge that grows in moist to wet soils in full sun to part shade. It is best propagated by division in spring or fall. It can also be propagated from seed, but it is slow to germinate and can take up to two years to reach maturity.
