It is found in tropical regions of the world, such as South America, Africa, and Southeast Asia. It typically grows on moist, shady, acidic soil, such as in forests, on tree trunks, and on rocks.

Chonecolea andina has small, yellowish-green flowers with a single perianth lobe. The seeds are small, round and black. The seedlings are small and green.
