Description
Salacia chlorantha (also called Chlorantha Salacia, Chlorantha Salacia Tree, and Chlorantha Salacia Shrub, among many other common names) is a species of flowering plant in the Celastraceae family. It is native to India, and is found in tropical and subtropical moist montane forests. It is an evergreen shrub with small, white flowers and long, narrow leaves.
Uses & Benefits
Salacia chlorantha is used as an ornamental plant in gardens and parks. It is also used in traditional medicine to treat fever and as an anti-inflammatory.
Flower, Seeds and Seedlings
The flowers of Salacia chlorantha are white, with four petals and five sepals. The seeds are small and black, and the seedlings are slender and dark green.
Cultivation and Propagation
Salacia chlorantha can be propagated by seed or division. Seeds should be sown in spring or autumn in a cold frame and should germinate in 1-3 months at 15°C. When they are large enough to handle, prick the seedlings out into individual pots and plant them out in the summer. Division in spring or autumn. Very easy, larger clumps can be replanted direct into their permanent positions, though it is best to pot up smaller clumps and grow them on in a cold frame until they are rooting well. Plant them out in the spring.
