Description
Syrrhopodon kiiense (also called Kii Bristle-moss, among many other common names) is a species of moss found in tropical and subtropical regions. It is a small, tufted moss with slender, erect stems and branches. The leaves are small, lanceolate-lanceolate, and the capsules are small and cylindrical. It is found in moist forests, grasslands, and other habitats.
Uses & Benefits
Syrrhopodon kiiense is used as a soil amendment to improve the water-holding capacity of soils, as a mulch to reduce evaporation and erosion, and as a potting medium for plants.
Cultivation and Propagation
Syrrhopodon kiiense can be propagated by division or by spore sowing. When propagating by division, divide the plant in spring or early summer. When propagating by spore sowing, collect the spores in late summer or early autumn and sow them on a moist, sterile medium. Keep the medium moist and in a shady spot until the spores germinate. Transplant the seedlings to individual pots when they are large enough to handle.
