Description
Blechnum petiolare (also called 'Petiolate Blechnum', among many other common names) is a small to medium-sized fern with a spreading growth habit. It is native to South America, and grows in moist, tropical forests. Its fronds are ovate, and its sori are small and round.
Uses & Benefits
Blechnum petiolare is used as an ornamental plant, for erosion control, and as a food source for birds and other animals.
Flower, Seeds and Seedlings
Blechnum petiolare has small, yellow flowers with four petals. The seeds are small, black and oval. The seedlings have a single, long, thin leaf with a pointed tip.
Cultivation and Propagation
Blechnum petiolare is a hardy, evergreen fern that is easily propagated from spores or division of the rhizomes. To propagate from spores, collect the spores when they are ripe and sow them on a sterile, moist medium. To propagate from division, carefully divide the rhizomes and replant in a moist, well-draining soil. Cultivation of Blechnum petiolare requires partial to full shade, moist soil, and protection from strong winds.
Where to Find Blechnum petiolare
Blechnum petiolare is native to Southeast Asia and is found in moist, shady places in lowland forests.
