Description
Philonotis americana (also called American Hair-Moss, among many other common names) is a small, tufted moss with short, narrow leaves. It is native to the Northern Hemisphere and is found in moist, shady habitats such as woodlands, grasslands, and rocky slopes.
Flower, Seeds and Seedlings
Philonotis americana has small white flowers with four petals and a single pistil. The seeds are small, round, and black. The seedlings are small and have a single stem with small, oval-shaped leaves.
Cultivation and Propagation
Philonotis americana can be propagated by division or seed. It prefers moist, well-drained soils and partial shade. It is best grown in humus-rich, acidic soils in a sheltered position in full sun or partial shade. It can tolerate some drought but should be watered regularly during dry periods. It can be pruned after flowering to maintain a neat shape.
