Description
Sanicula smallii (also called Small's sanicle, among many other common names) is a perennial herbaceous plant native to North America. It has a single stem that grows up to 1 m tall, with alternate, compound leaves. The flowers are small and white and are clustered in umbels. It grows in moist habitats such as swamps, marshes, and wet meadows.
Uses & Benefits
Sanicula smallii is a medicinal herb that has been used for centuries to treat a variety of ailments. It is believed to have anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, and analgesic properties. It can also be used to make tea and as a flavoring in cooking.
Flower, Seeds and Seedlings
The flower of Sanicula smallii is white and has five petals. The seed is small and round-shaped. The seedling has a single, long, narrow leaf.
Cultivation and Propagation
Sanicula smallii can be propagated by seed, division, or cuttings. The seeds should be sown in spring or autumn in a cold frame and the seedlings should be potted up into individual pots when they are large enough to handle. Division can be done in early spring or autumn. Larger clumps can be divided using two forks to ease them apart. Cuttings of side shoots can be taken in spring or summer and rooted in a cold frame. The plants can be planted out into their permanent positions in late spring or early summer, after the last expected frosts.
Where to Find Sanicula smallii
Sanicula smallii can be found in the western United States and Canada, from British Columbia to California and east to Montana and Wyoming.
