Description
Nothoscordum portoalegrense (also called Porto Alegre False Garlic, among many other common names) is an annual herbaceous plant native to South America. It has a basal rosette of leaves and a single stem with a terminal cluster of white flowers. It grows in moist meadows, grasslands, and open woodlands.
Uses & Benefits
Nothoscordum portoalegrense is used as an ornamental plant in gardens and as a medicinal plant for treating various ailments. It is also used to make herbal teas and as a dye for fabrics.
Flower, Seeds and Seedlings
Nothoscordum portoalegrense has white flowers with yellow centers, and its seeds are small and black. Its seedlings have long, thin stems and small, oval-shaped leaves.
Cultivation and Propagation
Nothoscordum portoalegrense can be propagated by seed or division. Seeds should be sown in spring in a cold frame. When they are large enough to handle, prick the seedlings out into individual pots and plant them out in the summer. Division in spring or autumn. Larger divisions can be planted out direct into their permanent positions. We have found it best to pot up the smaller divisions and grow them on in a cold frame until they are rooting well. Plant them out in the spring.
