Description
Hemigraphis rumphii (also called Purple Ivy, among many other common names) is a perennial herbaceous plant native to Southeast Asia. It is an evergreen, woody-stemmed, creeping plant with small, ovate, dark green leaves, which are reddish-purple underneath. It grows in moist, shady areas, such as along riverbanks and in rainforests.
Flower, Seeds and Seedlings
Hemigraphis rumphii has small, white flowers that are borne in clusters on long, thin stalks. The seeds are small and black, and the seedlings are thin and delicate.
Cultivation and Propagation
Hemigraphis rumphii can be propagated by division or cuttings. It prefers a moist, well-drained soil and partial shade. It is best grown in a container with a good quality potting mix. Water regularly and fertilize monthly during the growing season. Prune back in late winter or early spring to encourage new growth.
