Shrimp the Most Eaten Seafood in the US
If you live in the US, you must have sampled the humble white shrimp, pink shrimp or brown shrimp on a dish. As the most consumed American seafood, shrimps commanded 4.60 pounds per capita consumption in 2018, per the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
In 2024, the National Fisheries Institute (NFI) pushed up US’ shrimp consumption to 5.5 pounds per person per year. Only tuna neared this rate at 3.22 pounds per capita.
Shrimp Associations with Prawns
When checking the market price of shrimp in US, you may also want to learn about these aquatic critters and their cousins, prawns.
Shrimps are tiny swimming crustaceans bearing long antennae and elongated streamlined bodies. They are often paired off with prawns (Penaeus monodon) in seafood markets due to their striking physical similarities. They not only look the same but provide mild and sweet delicacies as seafood.
However, prawns grow larger than shrimps, and for this reason they are code-named “large shrimps.”Some large shrimps also receive the nickname of “giant tiger prawns.”
Shrimps grow to an average size of 0.5 to 5.5 cm for males and 0.5 to 8.5 cm long for females. Large shrimps measure between 7 and 12.7 cm long, while extra-large ones reach 20 to 30.5 cm. Jumbo ones average 25 to 33 cm long for females and weigh up to 320 g (11 oz).
How do Shrimps Sell in the US?
Shrimps sell either fresh/raw or cooked/frozen in groceries across the United States. Raw ones come mostly in packaged counts of at least 8 pieces and a maximum 80 pieces to the pound. They are also mostly deveined, which is the removal of the digestive vein to drain them, followed by salting.
Because cleaning, deveining and packing add to the price tag, some customers buy live shrimp wholesale and devein them at home. According to the Federal Reserve Bank, shrimp at a typical fisherman’s market in March 2025 cost a nominal $7.43 per kg ($3.38 per pound). In American retail markets, the price of raw shrimps starts at around $6 per pound.
Cooked shrimps on the other hand sell at grocers as ready-to-warm frozen meals. As such, they increase the market price of shrimp in US by at least 5 cents. In March 2025, a cooked frozen shrimp without a tail on Walmart cost between $0.45 and $0.57 per oz ($7.2-9.12 per pound).
Shopping US Shrimp by Size
You will find that size determines a sizable portion of the market price of shrimp in US. The larger the crustacean, the bigger the hole it will leave in your pocket. This is especially true of the jumbo shrimp that weighs 7 to 11 oz apiece. Customers however mostly encounter packed options containing many small specimens. Below is a look at four commercial sizes and their pricing across retail stores.
Raw small shrimps
It will take 60 to 80 small uncooked shrimps to fit in your 1-lb bag. But they cost the least of all sizes, from $0.39 per oz or $6.24 per pound, based on online offers.
Raw large shrimps
If you value something medium, then large fresh shrimp sizing is the option to consider. It needs around 31 to 40 of these critters to fill a 1-lb pouch. However, they will cost at least 1 cent more than small ones. March 2025 offers online for example started at $0.40 per oz or $6.46 per pound.
Raw extra-large shrimps
With their tails peeled, fresh extra-large shrimps can fill your 1-lb bag in counts of 26 to 30. This hassle-free size does not come generously in the price department, however. The package costs at least ¢7 more than that for small ones. In March 2025, retailers were selling them at $0.47 per oz or $7.52 per pound.
Colossal shrimps or jumbo shrimps
Yet another popular but costly option is that of raw jumbo shrimps with or without the shell. They range from 6 to 20 pieces per pound in most commercial packages. They cost between $19.9 and $24.99 per pound but their prices can hit $29.99 during scarcity.
