Two Influencers of Mexico’s Egg Prices
If you have ever savored the scrambled egg dish known as Huevos a la Mexicana, then you recognize Mexico’s mastery of egg-based breakfasts. Despite this culinary expertise, the price of eggs in Mexico can be surprisingly low in domestic markets. Two key factors—high consumption and controlled retail rates—keep prices affordable.
High Consumption
Mexico regularly ranks in the top 5 egg-consuming nations and so the government controls prices to satiate the high appetite.
In 2021, each person in Mexico consumed 21.4 kg of eggs per year, second only to China, according to the Helgi Library. This translates to approximately 375–400 eggs per person annually.
But whenever there is shortage compounded by recent avian flu cases in the 2024-25 period, prices inevitably go up. Luckily, Mexico has a price floor for basics like eggs, which the government last set in November 2024 through price controls.
As of February 10, 2025, a supermarket dozen of white eggs in Mexico was selling for MX$53 to MX$69.99 ($2.58–$3.36). This equates to MX$88.30 to MX$115 ($4.30–$5.60) per kg, assuming an average egg weight of 50g.
Retail Prices in Mexico Compared to Regional Prices
The retail price of eggs in Mexico is relatively low in comparison with regional prices. For example the prices of eggs in Mexico as of February 2025 is cheaper compared to the prices of eggs in the United States. In early February 2024, egg prices in Mexico averaged just MX$45.57 ( $2.22) per dozen. This converts to MX$75.95 ($3.70) per kg.
For comparison, Mexico’s egg prices are almost half the cost of those in the United States and Cuba.
