Equatorial Guinea coved by dense tropical rainforest that is exploited by the lumbering industry. The forest contains about 140 species of wood species.it has the most commercialized Aucoumea klaineana, walnut and various mahogany.

The country earns about 243 million US dollars from the export of wood annually. Most of the forest is in the coastal region of Mbini and in its islands of Pigalu and Bioko. The wood export is dated back in the 18th century in the island of Bioko located in the Gulf of guinea facing the coast of Cameroon was a strategic and commercial centre for Spanish and Portuguese. About 1.5 million hectares of land is forested.

The leading export destination of Equatorial Guinea wood is Japan, Spain, Turkey, China and Portugal.

Some of the common varieties include;

  • Okoume (Aucoumea klainean), Limba(Terminalia superba)
  • sipo( entandrophragma utile), sapelli(entandrophragmaNcylindrium), as well as the light hardwood such as Ayous(Triplochinton scleroxylon)

  • Mahogany
  • Mangrove along the river banks and the coastal region

 Equatorial Guinea has a tropical climate with district wet and dry seasons. From June to August, Rio Muli is dry, and Bioko is wet. From December to February Rio Mali is wet and Biako is dry. The temperature ranges between 16 to 30 degrees Celsius in Malabo and very high temperatures in the southern Moka plateau. It receives rainfall of 193-1500 mm annually. The climatic conditions of the country hence favour the growth of the different varieties of wood.

Equatorial Guinea wood is harvested throughout the year. Harvesting is done by managements units which have been given the tree cutting permit by the government. The lumbering industries does the logging in the country .most of the wood processing companies are located near the sourcing point to reduce the cost of transportation. Logging companies were banned from the Bioko to reduce deforestation in 1991, and since then it has been replaced with small-scale saw millers whose activities have little treats to the forests.

The processed wood is then transported by railway and designed trucks to the port of Malabo for export.
