Vietnam Strawberry: New strawberry varieties yield over 30 tons/ha

LAM DONG: New strawberry variety in Vietnam PS8.10 is resistant to powdery mildew and anthracnose and has a yield of over 30 tons/ha. Especially, the ripe fruit is very fragrant, delicious, sweet, and popular in the market.

Snow white strawberries cost from 700,000 to 900,000 VND/kg ( from US$29.85/kg) but they are not enough to sell. The Research Center for Potatoes, Vegetables and Flowers (located in Da Lat City, Lam Dong, under the Southern Institute of Agricultural Science and Technology) said that the “new strawberry variety PS8.10” has been transferred to a unit number of households, producing and achieving high efficiency.

Dr. Nguyen The Nhuan, Director of the Center for Potato, Vegetable and Flower Research, said that since 2018 the center has implemented a new program of breeding and selecting strawberry varieties.

On the basis of the news source, there are strawberries imported from Korea and some strawberry varieties being cultivated in Lam Dong. Some hybrid combinations have been evaluated as promising, including PS 1.07, PS 7.01, PS. 8.07, PS 8.14, PS 17.04 and PS 8.10. Among these varieties, PS 8.10 is the most dominant.

The variety has a growth period from 95-100 days, and it is quite resistant to powdery mildew and anthracnose. PS8.10 has a cone shape, turns red when ripe, is very fragrant, delicious and sweet, popular and appreciated by the market.

Dr. Nguyen The Nhuan  said that the PS8.10 variety has high and stable yield potential. Through a small area trial in 3 crops in Lam Dong, the average yield was 32.1 tons/ha/year, 29.1% higher than the control variety. In the large-scale trial, the average yield was 30.3 tons/ha/year, 23.4% higher than the control variety.

Currently, farmers in Da Lat have requested the Potato, Vegetable and Flower Research Center to breed new strawberries to meet production needs. From 2021 up to now, the PS8.10 strawberry variety has been propagated by the Center for Potato, Vegetable and Flower Research and transferred to a number of strawberry farmers in Da Lat city. Accordingly, this strawberry variety has been accepted by the people and the market.

Farmers have also requested this new Strawberry Breeding Center to expand the area in the near future.
