Nigeria-United States agricultural trade attains $700 million, wheat leading

Agricultural cargo is subject to Ag tariffs

Nigeria-United States agricultural trade looks onto more than doubling annually to $700 million in 2025 amid burgeoning wheat trade.

A post on X by the  U.S.’ diplomatic mission to Abuja on December 9, 2025 revealed this projection, per confirming reports.

The figure mainly reflects farm imports from the United States worth $500 million, according to a U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA)’s August 2025 forecast.

This projection more than doubles the U.S.’ agricultural export receipts from Nigeria in 2024 at $219 million.

The gaining value is interesting in a tense tariff  environment. Nigeria has traditionally levied an average 12.5% on most U.S.’ imports versus a 1% median by the U.S.

President Trump sought to balance the above duty discrepancy when he announced 15% universal tariffs on Nigeria’s goods starting April 2025.

Wheat Trade Soldiers On

Wheat, America’s third biggest overall export to Nigeria after machinery and vehicles, seems like withstanding tariffs.

On December 9, the U.S. diplomatic mission oversaw the arrival of 50,000 tonnes of stateside wheat in Lagos.

The $15-million purchase was by Flour Mills of Nigeria, which processes human food at home after importing the raw grain.

Consulate officials see this huge order as offering mutual benefits to farmers back home and food processing workers at the destination.

Nigeria’s mill workers process the imported wheat into affordable flour for home baking or making commercial pasta, bread and semolina.

Other Ag imports from stateside include soybeans and seafood while Nigeria reciprocates with cocoa, cashew nuts and animal feed.

As a result of import dependancy for especially grains, Nigeria enjoys a bilateral agricultural trade deficit with the United States.

In overall trade, Nigeria leads the United States with $5.7 billion in annual exports (2024) versus $4.2 billion in imports.  The data section below follows up the issue in an agricultural trade context.

Nigeria-United States Agricultural Trade Statistics

Nigeria and the U.S. partake of trade exceeding $9.9 billion annually, as of 2024, a small share of which from agriculture. In 2025, for example, the U.S. diplomatic mission in Nigeria forecast agricultural trade between the two nations at $700 million annually. The United States Embassy and Consulate in Nigeria has additionally supported 5 million farmers between 2019 and 2025 through development projects.

According to the ACIOE Associates, agricultural imports by Nigeria from the U.S. are the 3rd highest after machinery and vehicles. In 2024, these Ag imports alone represented about 15% of overall multi-sector bilateral trade.
