Seasonal avocado exports from Peru to the U.S. increase by 75%

Peru has recorded a 75% rise in avocado exports to the United States in spring/summer 2025, versus a similar timing from 2024.

According to the Peruvian Avocado Commission (CAP)’s president Xavier Equihua via Agraria on December 30, 2025, origin diversification spurred exports.

Equihua tabled U.S.-bound dispatches for spring and summer 2025 as having increased to 230 million pounds from 130 million pounds in 2024.

2025’s shipments to the U.S. represent about 16.5%-18% of Peru’s worldwide avocado exports this year.  The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) projected in May that Peru would export 630,000 tonnes of the fruit this year.

Another June 2025 tally by the Hass Avocado Producers and Exporters of Peru (ProHass) had forecast annual shipments at 655,000 tonnes.

The growth reprises annual shipments in 2023, a year when external volumes rose by 9% year-on-year, to 594,778 tonnes.

Targeted Retail Campaign

Although most exports reach Europe where Peru controls 42% avocado market share, the U.S.’ share is gaining from targeted marketing.

The CAP is using promotions to engage international consumers on choosing quality fruits at a time when Americans are consolidating origin diversification.

Retail campaigns emphasize nutritional benefits from avocados such as heart health, a turning point in preference for the fruit.

That this is working is the fact that the U.S. market still grew significantly despite the application of a 10% import tariff in April.

José Antonio Castro, head of ProHass, had earlier in June attributed the phenomenal improvement in adverse trade circumstances to “joint effort.

Indeed, growers, shippers and industry bodies all partake in promoting avocado supplies originating from Peru and hence their growing export appeal in North America. This continental destination forms the topic of the statistics below.

Peru Avocado Exports to the U.S. Statistics

Avocados are a superfood in Peru in economic terms, mainly through exports. Peru ships fresh avocados to 35 markets abroad, of which the United States absorbs from 13% (2024) to 16.5% (2025 preliminary) of the total volumes. Although the U.S. lags behind import leader, the Netherlands (32% share, 2024), it is increasingly recording sharp import growth. In spring and summer 2025, for instance, imports into the U.S. grew by 75% vis-á-vis a similar period in 2024, per Agraria.

Because the bulk of exports take place from March to August, they coincide with the northern spring/summer when avocado consumption is high. Due to high demand in the American market at this time, export values of Peru’s avocados rise even if volumes fall. For instance, U.S.’ annual imports fell by 10% in volumes to 674,000 tonnes in 2024, but climbed 14% in value to US$179 million. Notably, the International Trade Council cites average global prices for avocados to have climbed to US$2.16/kg in August 2024.
