Green gold rush: the United States avocado market volume smashes record

Some of the avocados in the United States market grow at home

The United States is in avocado gold rush mood, with domestic market volumes poised to hit an unprecedented 3 billion pounds in 2025.

On December 8, 2025, the Hass Avocado Board (HAB) proclaimed that home volumes from growers, packers, exporters and importers fueled the breakthrough.

The HAB cites that the country has been chasing this dream since 2020 when it first neared the historical milestone.

“Surpassing 3 billion pounds is not just a number – it is a testament to the tireless efforts of producers, importers and marketers.” This is according to HAB’s executive director Emiliano Escobedo.

Escobedo’s board has notably helped make this a superfood in America through promotional initiatives on nutrition.

Production, Imports & Exports Advancing

Aggregate market quantities in 2025 are up by 4% from 2024, an indicator of growing purchases despite tariff-affiliated price mark up.

Leading the advance is federal production, which in the preceding season (2024) had risen by 52.9% year-on-year, to 187,070 tonnes (411.55 million pounds). But this was still shy of the record 2020 output that had breached 200,000 tonnes or 440 million pounds.

National production leader California projected to harvest 208 million pounds in 2024, per the California Avocado Commission (CAC).

Out of this, Hass avocados made 196 million pounds, somewhat reducing dependency for the popular cultivar from the southern border.

Imports nevertheless remain the most important domestic market volume driver – and 80-90% of the entire supply originates from Mexico.

In 2024, the United States ordered 1.2 billion tonnes in fresh avocados worth $3.87 billion, the bulk from Mexico.

With such home demand, exports are just a drop in the ocean at only 5,114 tonnes in 2024. They have waned considerably since the production heyday of the early 2000s. And as the stats below indicate, the avocado market in the United States once relied more on home production than imports.

United States Avocado Market Statistics

Avocados are some of the most consumed foods (as fresh fruit, pie or guacamole) in the United States. In the 2000-21 period, Americans tripled consumption to over 8 pounds per person per year, according to the USDA’s Economic Research Service (ERS). This means 8 pounds of avocados were available to each citizen per capita, whether consumed or not.

While home production represented only 10% of market supplies averaging 400 million pounds a year in the early 2020s, it was not like this before. At the turn of the millennium, only 40% of avocado imports came from abroad, but today they are roughly 90%. Growing consumption and demand have accounted for rising imports. This is per the below ERS’ and Hass Avocado Board  (HAB)’s data interpretation:

YearConsumption/Availability [per person per year] Total Consumption [pounds]
2025-263 billion
2020-21over 8 poundsAlmost 3 billion
2016-17over 7 pounds Below 2.5 billion
2010-115 poundsBelow 1.5 billion
