$15 million factory at Sokhna to spur textile production in Egypt

textile production in Egypt

The Suez Canal Economic Zone and Infinity Fabric on October 15, 2025 proposed a $15-million textile production facility at Ain Sokhna in Egypt.

Occupying 2.4 hectares of land near the Red Sea, the factory will churn out 6,000 tonnes of yarn and 15,000 tonnes of fabric annually.

Upon completion in quarter 3, 2026, the plant will prioritize production and dawn some 1,000 direct employment chances.

The longterm aim of the deal is to expand Egypt’s exports fourfold from the $2.81 billion of 2024 to $12 billion before 2031.

It will also enhance the national yarn- and -garment making sector, whose market valuation might reach $11.85 billion by 2030, per independent analysis.

Which are the Sources of the Textile?

Growth momentum will emanate from the yarn, lint and fiber sub-sectors, through cotton, flax and wool raw materials.

Regarding wool, its yarn is the primary product for the textile sector, which in turn converts it to warm clothing.

Beginning the 14th century B.C., Egypt prided in rearing sheep with corkscrew horns for wool.

35 centuries later in 2018, the country had a sheep herd of over 5.69 million head, more than any other livestock.

By 2022, the wool yarn sector was still strong, with production of shorn wool at 11, 850 tonnes, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

Cotton in its part has come from being an underdog into a major source of lint for breathable cloth weaving.

Before 1800, the fiber was insignificant for Egypt but by 2024 imports were at 450,000 bales against a production of 310,000 bales. This was in order to meet burgeoning textile demand, per an U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) forecast.

Other textile sources with strong utility include flax seed of which Egypt is a top exporter alongside the likes of Russia and India. The fabric undergoes exports either retted or as finished linen. And as the statistics below point out, competitively priced flax, unlike other fabrics, enjoys steady production.

Egypt Textile Production Statistics

Egypt prides in three major yarn or lint materials, namely cotton, flax seed and wool, which supplement synthetic fibers in textile making. While 2019-23 raw or retted flax seed output stabilized at 7,700 tonnes, ginned cotton production fluctuated from 59,000 to 90,000 tonnes annually. In 2024, the country’s cotton-milling capacity stood at 600,000 bales, 450,000 of which would be imports primarily from Sudan, per an USDA forecast. The data below, courtesy the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), underlines five-year production patterns of the two fibers:

Wool and fleece, too, go into the North African nation’s winter clothing industry. The below figures from the FAOSTAT tabulate the 2019-22 output.
