Blueberries harvest rocks the Northwest and Northeast U.S.

Blueberries harvest rocks the Northwest and Northeast U.S.

Two opposite sides of the United States are recording impressive respective 2025 harvest seasons of conventional and wild blueberries (Vaccinium corymbosum)

The wild blueberries crop in the Northeast is ripening while the cultivated one in the Pacific Northwest is courting early marketing stages.

On the East Coast, Maine will kickstart its reaping proper with the annual Maine Wild Blueberry Weekend on August 2, 2025. In 2024, 10,000 folks flocked the 2-day event, and could reprise attendance this year in equal numbers.

So far, wild blueberry enthusiasts have been heading to the Fields Fields Wild Organic Blueberries in Dresden for u-pick services.

U-pick drives could help harvest some 10,000 pounds of berries from the farm’s 35 acres dedicated to the fruit.

Co-owner Ashley Field told Spectrum Local News on July 24, 2025 that Fields Fields’ berries “look great” despite a slow beginning.

Farms such as this one have made Maine the exclusive federal wild blueberry supplier, with a 2024 output above 88 million pounds.

Northwest Crop Blooming

On the other side are Washington, Oregon and California, the créme de la créme in the conventional blueberries harvest.

Although booming production in Oregon echoes robust output in Canada’s British Columbia (B.C.), market competition remains low this early.

While B.C.’s season will peak from early to end August, Oregon’s will see through the last of September.

As the second biggest cultivated blueberry-producing state, Oregon foresees strong production at 165 million pounds in 2025. This according to the Oregon Blueberry Commission on a July 26, 2025 forecast.

For Washington,  a providential frost-free 2025 crop promises to surpass the output in 2024 of 205 million pounds

California, too, projects steady volumes ending September, although some farms here enjoy year-round supplies.

One such is the California Giant Berry Farms. Besides currently recording steady summer 2025 output, the farm says it is striving for top quality 12-month supplies.

Two regions of the United States therefore look poised for handsome blueberries harvest this summer. As the statistics below reveal, Maine, Washington and Oregon top in two different blueberry niches.

United States Wild, Organic and Conventional Blueberries Harvest Statistics

The United States is a leading blueberries hub, with an annual production of 795.3 million pounds, as of 2024. Two main categories comprise production, namely wild and organic/conventional berries. While organic and conventional blueberries grow in diverse states, 95% to 100% of commercial wild blueberries grow naturally in Maine.

According to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS), almost all commercial output is in cultivated form. Its total worth in 2024 was $1.15 billion, and was mainly from 8 states that grow commercial blueberries. They include the top 3 Northwest states, alongside Georgia, Florida, Michigan, North Carolina and New Jersey.

Which two states produce the most conventional/organic blueberries?

Per the table below, mastered from NASS, Washington leads Oregon in cultivated (conventional and organic) blueberry output.

Are wild blueberries eaten fresh in the United States

Because they grow naturally without chemicals, wild blueberries need fresh consumption upon picking. The miracle of flash freezing wild blueberries upon harvest, however, helps them reach retail markets still fresh. Indeed, 98% of the total harvest undergoes instant freezing, which also applies to exports, according to the USDA.
