Odisha squeezes its celebrated mangoes into France, Belgium markets

The eastern India state of Odisha has in June 2025 secured market entry for its popular mangoes in France and Belgium.

Successful negotiations by the state’s Department of Agriculture & Farmers’ Empowerment in conjunction with Palladium India locked the deal.

The bilateral development brings Odisha’s mangoes to seven lucrative city destinations that include Dubai, Rome, London and Dublin, among others.

Dubai and London received a joint consignment of 13.4 tonnes of mangoes in week 1 of June, before the France/Belgium breakthrough.

Farmers’ producer organisations (FPOs) such as Saptasajya FPC and Sugandha FPC facilitated the Dubai/London exports by meeting phytosanitary stipulations.

Celebrating the latest breakthrough, farmer Subhashini Charter told Krishak Jagat that local growers “never imagined our mangoes would reach France.”

Such enthusiasm is because direct exports to premium markets bring 40 to 60% higher export prices than to traditional destinations.

Celebrated Amrapalli Variety

By capturing high-end markets, key mango varieties helped Odisha export 100 tonnes of agricultural produce between May 2024 and May 2025.

Two varieties that include Amrapalli and Dasheri made the biggest contribution to the sales volume in the above timeline.

The Amrapalli cultivar with its rich taste and resplendent tinge is a mainstay of tribal farming in several Odisha districts.

After the state exported tens of tonnes of the cultivar to several destinations in May 2025, the target in June is 50 tonnes. This could be easy, especially with France and Belgium coming in.

According to women farmers in Dhenkanal district, these mangoes usually generate tenfold price value in premium markets in Europe versus regional outlets.

Dhenkanal is one of the eight mango-producing demarcations in Odisha. In marketing, it compares well with Indore, the mango processing capital in India’s central state of Madhya Pradesh. And as the following statistics indicate, Odisha as a whole contributes to India’s lead as a global mango production leader.

Odisha Mango Statistics

Odisha in eastern India is one of the states that help India account for 50% of the global mango supplies. Although in production it trails Tamil Nadu, Bihar, Gujarat, Karnataka, West Bengal, alongside Andhra and Uttar Pradesh, Odisha fronts popular consumer varietals.

How big is the Bay of Bengal’s mango acreage

On the Bay of Bengal are two mango-producing states, namely Odisha and West Bengal. Odisha ranks 9th or represents 5% of all-India mango production, from an area averaging 95,000 hectares. In comparison, the state’s neighbor, West Bengal, boasts over 130,000 hectares.

Which mango varieties lead in Odisha?

Amrapalli, Dasheri (Dussehri), Neelam and Langda are some of the major mango cultivars in Odisha.  Dhenkanal district alone produced around 7,000 tonnes of mangoes in the 2024-25 season, mostly Amrapalli and Dasheri.
