Wheat planting in Argentina underway with high production hopes

Wheat planting in Argentina underway with high production hopes

Wheat farmers in Argentina started planting the 2025-26 crop end May 2025, with conducive weather pointing to a record harvest next January.

A May 29 report by the Buenos Aires Grains Exchange (BdeC) cites dry conditions in the northern and western wheat belts as sowing-friendly.

BdeC projects sowing to cover 6.7 to 7.2 million hectares, which could nurture the second biggest crop ever, at 21 million tonnes.

The exchange recorded planting in the strategic north-central area of Córdoba province as quicker than in the past five-year median.

As testament to the good pace, planting on 10.5% of the acreage was over before the late May report.

Hopes of the next crop has prompted the government to extend a tax slash on wheat exports till March 2026.

The measure aims to up “the profitability of producers” by upping exports and streamlining prices

Ongoing Crop Harvests

As winter wheat planting progresses, corn and oilseed harvests are wrapping up in eastern Argentina.

By May 29, the soy harvest in eastern provinces was 80.7% over, but was lagging at 61%  in Buenos Aires from high humidity.

Argentina leads in worldwide soymeal exports, hence the importance of a smooth soybean harvest.

Corn, on the other hand, was also dragging at 40.5% completion but its production could hit 49 million tonnes.

Like soy and corn, there has also been some delay in wheat sowing in eastern zones due to foregoing heavy precipitation.

All in all, wheat planting in Argentina is generally stable and is going down the wire to producing a record crop. The statistics below extend the story by covering planting and acreage data.

Argentina Wheat Planting Statistics

Wheat cultivation in Argentina covered over 5 million hectares per year between 2019 and 2023. Production from this total area hit 18 million tonnes in the 2024-25 year, per a U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA)’s forecast. Planting takes place each southern winter at the end of May while the harvest occurs the following January.

Which provinces produce the most wheat in Argentina

Buenos Aires not only has the biggest national wheat area but produces 50% of the national wheat. It is followed by Santa Fe at 18% and Córdoba at 13%.

What is Argentina’s wheat acreage and yield in the 2019-25 period

According to the FAOSTAT’s data, the wheat planting area averaged above 6 million hectares in the 2019-23 period, apart from 2023. The same case applies to the yields, which averaged over 2,500 kg/ha, apart from 2023. The table below illustrates the data.

Is the wheat area a big portion of Argentina’s total crop acreage?

Wheat is the third biggest crop in Argentina after maize and soybean in production volume and in the cultivated area. Between 2016 and 2021, the grain occupied over 5.8 million hectares out of the 35 million ha of cropland in Argentina. Wheat, maize, soy and sunflower together occupy 90% of the national crop area.
