Export opportunities to new markets of Vietnamese agricultural products

In addition to traditional markets such as China, EU, US and Australia, many Vietnamese agricultural products are strongly supported from many other potential markets such as Algeria and Turkey. This will be an opportunity for businesses to expand export markets, especially in the context of the still incomplete Covid-19 translation.

Open opportunities

Coffee is one of the most popular drinks among the Algerians. On average, a resident consumes more than 3kg/year. Every year, Algeria imports about 130,000 tons of coffee beans of all kinds worth US $ 300 million. The type of Robusta coffee accounts for the majority of the total import turnover of Algeria’s coffee (more than 85%). Coffee exporters mainly for Algeria are Vietnam, Ivory Coast, Indonesia, Brazil, Italy.

For many years, coffee has always been Vietnam’s leading export item to Algeria. Vietnam’s coffee market share is usually maintained at the highest level, accounting for more than 50%. However, the Algeria market still has a lot of room for Vietnamese coffee. In addition to Soviet coffee, Vietnamese enterprises can promote the export of processed and dissolved coffee with higher added value.

For rice products, Algeria does not produce rice, so this item is almost 100%imported. The number of imported Algeria rice is about 100,000 tons/year. In terms of type, imported rice is mainly white rice, long seeds, 5% broken and rice. According to the assessment, this market is still promising for Vietnamese rice because people are used to the use of Vietnamese rice.

On the other hand, the number of Asian workers in Algeria is increasing, especially Chinese. Particularly, the number of Vietnamese workers working for Chinese, Japanese, French and Algerian contractors has reached more than 4,000 people. This will contribute to increasing rice demand in the Algeria market.

Spice

In addition, the demand for spices, especially Vietnam’s pepper is quite high. Cinnamon is also a Vietnamese product with the potential for export to Algeria. In 2020, Vietnam exported this item to Algeria with a turnover of 2.1 million USD.

For the Turkish market, according to data from the Turkish Statistical Institute (tuik), in the first 6 months of 2021, Turkey imported 3,764.1 tons of black pepper, worth more than 7.21 Million USD, up 9.4% in volume and 13.6% in value. In particular, Vietnam continues to be the country with the largest export in this market with 2,236.3 tons, reaching a turnover of more than 4.32 million USD, sharply increasing both in quantity and value (27.6% in. The amount and 37.1% in value) accounted for nearly 60% of the market share of export value to Turkey in the first 6 months of 2021.

With coffee items, in the first 6 months of this year, Vietnam ranked 9th in exporting coffee to Türkiye. However, in reality, the number is extremely limited, only about 103 tons with a value of 192.46 thousand USD, a sharp decrease of 55.2% in value compared to the first 6 months of 2020, accounting for only 0, 2% of the export turnover of Coffee into Turkey. In the coming time, opportunities will open for Vietnamese businesses with the capacity to produce Arabica and Robusta coffee.

Determining the key export item

The representative of the Vietnamese deal in Turkey said that the country is also a large tea consumption market, but mostly black tea. Meanwhile, Vietnam diversify green tea rather than black tea, so the output of Vietnamese tea exported to Turkey is not high. On the other hand, Vietnamese tea enterprises have not yet focused on exporting to this market. So, to increase the turnover, businesses need to determine Vietnamese black tea as the key item for exploitation.

Regarding rice items, in the first 6 months of 2021, Turkey also increased the import of rice from Vietnam with 1,798 tons of rice, worth more than 1.29 million US dollars.
