Roselle (Hibiscus sabdariffa) is a species of flowering plant in the genus Hibiscus that is native to Africa. Some cultivated it for the production of bast fibre used in cordage, made from its stem.[4] The fibre may be used as a substitute for jute in making burlap.

Hibiscus, specifically roselle, has been used in folk medicine as a diuretic and mild laxative.

It cold beverage can be prepared by first steeping the petals in hot water until the colors are leached from the petals, then adding lime juice (which turns the beverage from dark brown/red to a bright red), sweeteners (sugar/honey) and finally cold water/ice cubes.
