Fuertes Avocado in Kenya
The Fuertes avocado is green in color with a pear-like shape and rages from six to twelve ounces in size. The fruit has medium thin, smooth and dense skin that peels easily. It has marginal oil with rich and creamy flavor. Fuerte avocado is scientifically known as Persea Americana Mill because it is a hybrid of Mexican and Guatemalan types of avocado.

In Kenya Fuerte avocado grows well in areas such as Rift valley, Nyeri, Murang’a, Kiambu, Naivasha, Kisii, Siaya, west counties and most of the eastern parts of Kenya including Kangundo, Kathiani, Mua hills, Embu, Machakos and Meru. Avocados need total exposure to sunlight because it is highly heliophilous crop to ensure that there are high fruit-bearing production levels. The temperature should not be above 36ºC and rainfall of 1000 to 2500 millimeters is needed adequately throughout the year.

Seasons of Fuerte Avocados
Fuerte avocados season is mid-February to late October based on yearly variations. However some of the fruits can go past October as some farmers can pick great fruits as late as November. With the two rainy seasons in Kenya there is no need for fertilizers and irrigation as the Kenya highlands offer great climatic conditions for the Avocados to grow well. Avocado farming soils need good drainage and adequate moisture retention capacity that assist in water accumulation in the root zone. Avocados adapt to soil of PH 5.5-6.5 such as sandy loam.
