What are the origins of Purple Tea?

Kenya and Sri Lanka is the primary country for producing purple tea, although there is some production in India, Japan, and China. Purple tea is derived from purple and blue fruits like chokeberries, blueberries, and red cabbage. As a result, it has 135 times the level of anthocyanins found in green tea.

When you brew purple tea, the liquid turns a lovely purple as you would expect. When you squeeze in a bit of lemon, the liquid turns into a pretty pink hue.

The purplish tea leaves are very distinctive. Although some natural teas have a purple color to them, they are pretty scarce. The closest you can get is the deep blue color associated with the herbal tea that comes from the Butterfly Pea Flower.

In 2011, the Tea Research Institute finally allowed for the commercial cultivation of tea. In the decade since the release, there are a limited number of gardens producing purple tea plants.

The Brewing Process for Purple Tea

Brewing instructions are available on the packaging of most purple tea products. Just boil filtered water and then add about a teaspoon of tea leaves and steep for approximately 3 minutes.

Just remember always to use purified water or natural spring water when boiling water to brew tea. The teaware should be clean each time you use it.
