Sichuan Province has entered the spring irrigation centralized water supply period. Recently, this reporter learned from the Provincial Rural Water Conservancy Center that at the end of March, the total water storage capacity of the water conservancy project in Sichuan Province was 6.5 billion cubic meters, which was less than in the previous years. Among them, the water storage capacity of large and medium-sized reservoirs is 3.2 billion cubic meters, accounting for 49% of the total water storage. The rest is the water storage capacity of small reservoirs and the Shanpingtang and Shihe Weirs.

According to the data of the past three years, the average annual water supply of China’s Dachun rice water supply in Sichuan Water Conservancy Project is about 5.9 billion cubic meters. Considering that the existing water conservancy projects in Sichuan Province need to meet the needs of production, living and ecological water use in various irrigation areas, the spring irrigation water in Sichuan Province is still in a tight state. This is according to the relevant person in charge of the Water Resources Department. Especially in the local areas of Luzhou, Yibin, Zigong and Neijiang in southern Sichuan, where the earliest spring ploughing was started, the large-scale water conservancy projects were completed with less than the expected supply capacity. Hence, with the continuous drought in winter and spring, the pressure of spring irrigation water security is still large.

The Office of the Provincial Flood Control and Drought Control Headquarters predicts that the average rainfall in Sichuan Province in April is close to the same period of the previous year. It is expected that after the rainfall of early and middle April, the dry condition of most of the rice fields in the basin will be further alleviated, and the local areas of the southern and northern parts of the basin may continue to be regional or sporadic. At present, in view of the spring irrigation water situation and the development trend of the drought, the Water Resources Department and other departments are focusing on large and medium-sized reservoirs and small reservoirs with water supply tasks in Sichuan Province. The aim is to formulate water use plans and control the water levels month by month, so as not to miss the agricultural timings as much as possible.

According to the report plan of 19 cities and prefectures in Sichuan Province that grow rice except Aba and Ganzi, 28.14 million mu (1.9 million hectares) of rice will be planted in various parts of Sichuan this year, and the total area is basically the same as last year.
