{"id":24134,"date":"2026-01-14T13:22:15","date_gmt":"2026-01-14T13:22:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/?p=24134"},"modified":"2026-01-14T13:22:33","modified_gmt":"2026-01-14T13:22:33","slug":"wasde-report-sharpens-surplus-undercuts-world-wheat-prices","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/2026\/01\/14\/wasde-report-sharpens-surplus-undercuts-world-wheat-prices\/","title":{"rendered":"WASDE report sharpens surplus, undercuts world wheat prices"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>On January 12, 2026, the USDA\u2019s monthly World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usda.gov\/about-usda\/general-information\/staff-offices\/office-chief-economist\/commodity-markets\/wasde-report\"><u>WASDE<\/u><\/a>) report projected upscale wheat supplies, lowering prices a day after.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The WASDE raised international wheat production by 4.3 million tonnes annually in 2025-26, to 1.102 billion tonnes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also up is global consumption of the grain by 900,000 tonnes year-on-year (y-o-y), to 823.9 million tonnes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>International exports of the cereal will meanwhile increase by 1.1 million tonnes, to 219.8 million tonnes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The West, where winter wheat is still in the ground after sowing last fall, absorbed the glut news in bearish terms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Europe\u2019s wheat at Euronext in Paris fell daily by 1.3% to &nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ukragroconsult.com\/en\/news\/usda-again-sharply-raised-its-forecasts-for-global-wheat-production-and-ending-stocks-for-the-my-2025-26\/\"><u>\u20ac<\/u><u>189.25<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;($220.40) a tonne, doubling its fall after December 2025\u2019s WASDE.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chicago\u2019s soft red wheat for March delivery also slipped 1.2% to $187.9 a tonne, reprising its 4.8% slump after December 2025\u2019s WASDE.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hard red winter grain for March delivery in Kansas City also shed 0.7% day-on-day, to $193.2 a tonne.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Such bearish markets reflect glut in major production centers such as Argentina, which WASDE expects to produce a record 27.5 million tonnes (2025-26).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Similarly placed is Russia, which the USDA projects to produce 89.5 million tonnes or 2 million tonnes above 2024-25\u2019s output.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-neutral-market-stateside\"><strong>Neutral Market Stateside &nbsp;<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A little different situation pertains to&nbsp;<a href=\" www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/2025\/07\/22\/winter-wheat-harvest-in-2025-almost-over-in-the-us\"><u>winter wheat<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;in the United States, whose acreage and export forecasts remain put while production is up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite expectations of sharp acreage depreciation, the USDA only lowered 2025-26 winter acreage by<a href=\"https:\/\/m.farms.com\/news\/2026-us-winter-wheat-area-little-changed-but-above-expectations-237136.aspx\"><u>&nbsp;1%<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;from 2024-25, to 32.99 million acres.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The same thing accrues to exports, which the WASDE retains y-o-y at 900 million bushels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ending stocks for the United States in 2026 will be slightly higher by 8% than those of 2025, to 926 million bushels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Domestic utility will however neutralize the acreage dip by retreating down 20 million bushels, to 100 million bushels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The general effect is that&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/insights\/prices\/united-states-of-america\/wheat\/\"><u>federal wheat prices<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;at the farm-gate will follow general world trends by drifting down $0.1 annually to $4.9\/bushel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>February 10 is the date for the next WASDE, a time when the global wheat situation will be a bit clearer as the year unfolds. The below data section reviews the price aspect from a historical angle.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-world-wheat-prices-statistics\"><strong>World Wheat Prices&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>Statistics&nbsp;<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>International wheat prices rose from rock bottom at $88.55 in October 1999 to highs of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/fred.stlouisfed.org\/series\/PWHEAMTUSDM\"><u>$444.15 a tonne<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;in May 2022.
