{"id":24126,"date":"2026-01-14T09:55:35","date_gmt":"2026-01-14T09:55:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/?p=24126"},"modified":"2026-01-14T09:56:06","modified_gmt":"2026-01-14T09:56:06","slug":"dominican-republic-is-newest-darling-of-citrus-from-egypt","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/2026\/01\/14\/dominican-republic-is-newest-darling-of-citrus-from-egypt\/","title":{"rendered":"Dominican Republic is newest darling of citrus from Egypt"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Plant Quarantine Authorities in Egypt and the Dominican Republic have okayed the export of citrus fruits from Egypt to the Caribbean nation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Approval followed satisfactory inspections by a Dominican Republic phytosanitary delegation to Cairo in November 2025.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The two nations would then on January 12 officially push back the new export calendar to January 1, 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Egypt will henceforth ship pomegranates, oranges, grapefruit and tangerines, after years of related citrus fruit peel trade with its bilateral partner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The North African country last shipped&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/tradingeconomics.com\/egypt\/exports\/dominican-republic\/edible-fruits-nuts-peel-citrus-fruit-melons\"><u>$2.96 million<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;worth of nuts, melons, edible fruits and citrus fruit peel to the island nation in 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This indicates that a share of Cairo\u2019s projected 2025-26 fresh orange exports at 1.9 million tonnes will reach its new trading partner.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-high-potential-at-destination-meets-a-balanced-origin\"><strong>High Potential at Destination Meets a Balanced Origin&nbsp;<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Egypt has high hopes that its balanced production will meet seasonal demand by tourists who flock the pristine island destination each summer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although the Dominican Republic exports much citrus at $8.78 million (2023), it imports even more at $12.6 million, to satiate home demand.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most of its imports emanate from regional origins such as continental United States, Chile, Peru, Colombia and Belize.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Egypt in turn enjoys patronage in Europe, the Middle East and Russia, with citrus the&nbsp;<a href=\" www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/2025\/01\/15\/egypt-emerges-top-non-eu-exporter-of-hortic\"><u>top fruit export<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;to the European Union at 500,000 tonnes (2024). &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now that it is branching out exports to the Americas, Egypt will find shipping routes there closer than to east Asian markets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is also low-cost production of citrus, facilitating internationally appealing&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/insights\/prices\/egypt\/citrus-fruit\/\"><u>export prices<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;suitable for the competitive Dominican Republic market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, there is balanced supply at origin: Egypt\u2019s production starts in December for most citrus trees, ahead of the keynote Valencia oranges from mid-February.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Oranges such as navels and Valencia dominate production and represent 80% of exports ahead of tangerines (10%) and lemons (5.8%). &nbsp;Incidentally, lemons and oranges are important citrus categories in both the Dominican Republic and Egypt, per the below section.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-egypt-and-the-dominican-republic-citrus-statistics\"><strong>Egypt and the Dominican Republic Citrus&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>Statistics&nbsp;<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Though worlds apart geographically, the Dominican Republic and Egypt grow similar citrus fruits like Valencia oranges and lemons. The two countries export a margin of their respective production and import the rest. While the Dominican Republic ranked&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/oec.world\/en\/profile\/bilateral-product\/citrus\/reporter\/dom\"><u>55<\/u><u><sup>th<\/sup><\/u><\/a>&nbsp;worldwide in citrus exports in 2023 at $8.78 million, Egypt was in the top echelons that year.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In terms of trade, Egypt exports up to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/tradingeconomics.com\/egypt\/exports\/dominican-republic\/edible-fruits-nuts-peel-citrus-fruit-melons\"><u>$2.96 million<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;in non-citrus fruits to the Dominican Republic, as of 2024. The Dominican Republic in turn imports around $12.6 million (2023) in citrus value from Latin American neighbors and the United States. &nbsp;A new citrus trade agreement with Egypt in January 2026 will branch out origins outside the Americas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Regarding production, lemons lead the Dominican Republic\u2019s citrus acreage at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/latin-american.news\/lemons-exports-total-11539-tons-in-four-years\/\"><u>330,000 tasks<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;(33,000 hectares), as of 2024, according to the Latin American News. &nbsp;Total national citrus production was at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reportlinker.com\/clp\/country\/470135\/726301\"><u>181,100 tonnes<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;in 2021, the 48<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;highest worldwide. Initial projections meanwhile put 2026 output at 188,000 tonnes.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For Egypt, production and trade stats include the below takeaways:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol type=\"1\">\n<li>Export turnover of fresh oranges represents 20% of Egypt\u2019s forex earnings, according to the USDA\u2019s Foreign Agricultural Service (<a href=\"https:\/\/apps.fas.usda.gov\/newgainapi\/api\/Report\/DownloadReportByFileName?fileName=Citrus+Annual_Cairo_Egypt_EG2025-0031.pdf\"><u>FAS<\/u><\/a>).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The FAS forecast Egypt\u2019s orange production in 2025-26 at 4 million tonnes.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>National citrus fruit exports raked in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.trademap.org\/Country_SelProduct_TS.aspx?nvpm=1%7c%7c%7c%7c%7c0805%7c%7c%7c4%7c1%7c1%7c2%7c2%7c1%7c2%7c1%7c1%7c1\"><u>$815.343 billion<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;in 2022, the eighth highest globally &#8211; down from $854.966 billion in 2021.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Egypt\u2019s January-July 2023 citrus exports went on to be the highest globally at&nbsp;4.65 million metric tonnes,&nbsp;according to the Ministry of Agriculture.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Despite being a net exporter, Egypt also imported citrus worth &nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/oec.world\/en\/profile\/bilateral-product\/citrus\/reporter\/egy\"><u>$3.3 million&nbsp;<\/u><\/a>from West Asia and Brazil in 2021.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Plant Quarantine Authorities in Egypt and the Dominican Republic have okayed the export of citrus fruits from Egypt to the Caribbean nation.
