{"id":24115,"date":"2026-01-13T09:33:17","date_gmt":"2026-01-13T09:33:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/?p=24115"},"modified":"2026-01-13T09:35:21","modified_gmt":"2026-01-13T09:35:21","slug":"cherry-retail-in-south-africa-blossoms-on-china-market-hopes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/2026\/01\/13\/cherry-retail-in-south-africa-blossoms-on-china-market-hopes\/","title":{"rendered":"Cherry retail in South Africa blossoms on China market hopes\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>South Africa is practically converting nearing access for its cherry crop in China into local retail advantage, amid upshot demand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pretoria has in the past few months been anticipating feedback from Beijing on initial bilateral cherry trade &#8211; with analysts betting on a 2026-27 start.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The anticipation stems from October 2025 when the Minister of Agriculture John Steenhuisen secured&nbsp;<a href=\" www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/2025\/08\/07\/stone-fruits-from-south-africa-to-accost-china\"><u>China access for stone fruits<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;including apricots, plums, prunes, nectarines and pears.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the same visit, Steenhuisen won assurance that plant inspectors would tour South Africa to review blueberry and cherry import suitability.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now the waiting dream seems to be working domestically as retail chains and grocers court a maturing consumer base.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cleo Delcarme of Woolworths told&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sundaytimes.timeslive.co.za\/business\/news\/2026-01-10-sas-booming-cherry-industry-eyes-china-market-expansion\/\"><u>Sunday Times<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;in a January 10 story that \u201cfrom a retail perspective, the market for cherries has improved.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Delcarme cited branching out production across many new areas countrywide in tandem with growing consumer acceptance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another survey by Food Lover\u2019s Market via the&nbsp;<em>Times<\/em>&nbsp;showed that branded sales have lately risen 10-12% annually due to consumer awareness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cultural drivers of retail sales that are also leaving their mark range from popular cherry recipes to social media recommendations and festival utility.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-china-allure-and-varieties\"><strong>China Allure and Varieties<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This leaves the important economic driver of cultivating superior fruit through assertive varieties that can win over hard bets like China.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although about 41% of South Africa\u2019s cherry orchards are only five-year old, they are already multi-variety and suit diverse market segments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Traditional and low-chill&nbsp;sweet cherry (<a href=\"x-apple-ql-id:\/\/F27FD2A2-BED5-45F4-8B6B-355E88DD7C79\/Users\/twt.mac\/Desktop\/wps\/x\/%20www.selinawamucii.com\/plants\/rosaceae\/prunus-avium\/\"><u>Prunus avium<\/u><\/a>) types&nbsp;from Royal Hazel to Lapins currently do well in especially Ceres, Western Cape.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The province is leading the quality revolution by breeding much of the country\u2019s current 80 cherry cultivars.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is also the advantage of export timing, with South Africa targeting weeks 41 through 52 of the year.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>South Africa\u2019s cherries are usually ready for marketing from week 41, just a fortnight before Chile\u2019s. But both southern hemisphere countries are usually in peak shipping timings from week 46 onward.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite SA\u2019s oriental market proximity, it still have to compete with Chile\u2019s improving logistics via the new Tiajing port in northern China. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But before the China conquest, the country will need to check spotted wing drosophila (SWD) pests. The SWD were in early December 2025 affecting blueberries and were posing a threat to cherries. Controls, if any, will help grow cherry exports and retail within South Africa side by side, per the below stats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-south-africa-cherry-retail-statistics\"><strong>South Africa Cherry Retail&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>Statistics&nbsp;<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The cherry industry of South Africa is still in its infancy, with 40% of orchards dating to as recent as 2017. However, local retail has grown hand-in-hand with burgeoning foreign trade, representing&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sundaytimes.timeslive.co.za\/business\/news\/2026-01-10-sas-booming-cherry-industry-eyes-china-market-expansion\/\"><u>28%&nbsp;<\/u><\/a>of production versus 58% exports. Exclusively sweet cherry, total national production in 2025 hit a record 3,006 tonnes,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/smartcherry.world\/south-africa\/south-african-cherries-nearing-china\/\"><u>61%<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;of which from Western Cape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With such rapid growth, domestic regional sales have expanded rapidly. In the 2024-25 season, Johannesburg represented&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sundaytimes.timeslive.co.za\/business\/news\/2026-01-10-sas-booming-cherry-industry-eyes-china-market-expansion\/\"><u>50%&nbsp;<\/u><\/a>of township sales, followed by Pretoria (18%), Durban (16%) and Cape Town (12%). &nbsp;Johannesburg is notably the capital of Gauteng, producer of 12% of the national harvest.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What is the historical share of the local cherry market in SA?<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Domestic sales of South Africa\u2019s cherries have peaked in 2024-25 at over 1,600 tonnes or 28% of production.
