{"id":24087,"date":"2026-01-08T13:45:44","date_gmt":"2026-01-08T13:45:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/?p=24087"},"modified":"2026-01-08T13:48:41","modified_gmt":"2026-01-08T13:48:41","slug":"federal-chicken-production-rebounds-weakens-prices","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/2026\/01\/08\/federal-chicken-production-rebounds-weakens-prices\/","title":{"rendered":"Federal chicken production rebounds, weakens wholesale prices"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Broiler and conventional chicken production in the United States increased modestly end 2025, pulling down federal wholesale prices with it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite the lingering presence of the pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI), broiler production upped by 4% in December 2025 year-on-year (y-o-y).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Turkey output also advanced by 8.4% y-o-y, end 2025, according to David Anderson, a Texas A&amp;M University\u2019s extension economist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anderson further breaks down broiler meat volumes as&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.brownfieldagnews.com\/news\/u-s-poultry-production-ends-2025-strong-outlook-mixed\/\"><u>3.5% more<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;than 2024\u2019s, which had the effect of cooling erstwhile price hikes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After rapidly advancing halfway through 2025, cutout broiler values slumped from $1.07 a pound (lb) in May 2025 to&nbsp;$0.63\/lb&nbsp;by end year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cutouts represent various cuts such as boneless meat, wings, breast and other parts of chicken<em>&nbsp;which<\/em>&nbsp;sell at diverse rates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/m.farms.com\/news\/chicken-production-up-and-prices-down-236932.aspx\"><u>Farms.com<\/u><\/a>, wholesale boneless cuts sold at $1.16 a pound in December 2025, down from $2.77\/lb or 2024\u2019s average of $1.50.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Similarly-placed were legs at $0.59 a pound, a loss of &nbsp;$0.31 from the peak price of mid-2025. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-tyson-s-steps-up-federal-processing\"><strong>Tyson\u2019s Steps Up Federal Processing &nbsp;<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This trend might continue for sometime after federal meat heavyweight Tyson\u2019s ventured into chicken production at an idle&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.poultryproducer.com\/tyson-foods-acquires-shuttered-cargill-poultry-plant-signals-long-term-investment-in-chicken-production\/\"><u>processing plant&nbsp;<\/u><\/a>in Springdale, Arkansas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The acquisition of the former Cargill turkey processing plant indicates changing interests by a company that recently&nbsp;<a href=\" www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/2025\/11\/25\/tysons-beef-plant-closure-dawns-federal-bee\"><u>closed beef plants<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;in Texas and Nebraska.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A retrofit of existing infrastructure at the Cargill facility preempts an intention to revamp chicken processing, with additional focus on value addition.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Arkansas is a top poultry producer in the United States, another pointer that the refitted plant will rally supplies countrywide.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This business interest also hints at upscaling demand for chicken products after a lull in 2024 and 2025 due to mainly avian flu. As such, the stats in the next section examine this vital part of the U.S. poultry industry from a production angle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-united-states-chicken-production-statistics\"><strong>United States Chicken Production&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>Statistics&nbsp;<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The U.S. is the global leader in chicken production. Output hit 21.34 million tonnes in 2024-25, representing 20% global share, according to the USDA\u2019s Foreign Agricultural Service (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fas.usda.gov\/data\/production\/commodity\/0115000\"><u>FAS)<\/u><\/a>. According to the National Agricultural Statistics Service (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nass.usda.gov\/Publications\/Todays_Reports\/reports\/plva0425.pdf\"><u>NASS<\/u><\/a>), 65% of 2024\u2019s production value came from broilers while 30% from eggs. The rest at 5% represented live turkeys and 1% live chicken. Apart from broilers, live chicken sales in 2024 hit&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nass.usda.gov\/Publications\/Todays_Reports\/reports\/plva0425.pdf\"><u>$29.5 million<\/u><\/a>, versus live turkey at $3.69 billion.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Which states produce the most chicken?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The southern state of Georgia leads federal chicken production by unit count at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/worldpopulationreview.com\/state-rankings\/chicken-production-by-state\"><u>1.4 billion<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;head ( 2024).
