{"id":24030,"date":"2025-12-23T13:36:10","date_gmt":"2025-12-23T13:36:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/?p=24030"},"modified":"2025-12-23T13:36:12","modified_gmt":"2025-12-23T13:36:12","slug":"india-new-zealand-fta-champions-subcontinental-farmers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/2025\/12\/23\/india-new-zealand-fta-champions-subcontinental-farmers\/","title":{"rendered":"India-New Zealand FTA champions subcontinental farmers"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A historic India-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement (FTA) on December 22, 2025 has provided India\u2019s farmers with preferential treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While New Zealand will allow 100% duty-free imports, India will only give market access to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessworld.in\/article\/india-keeps-dairy-vegetables-sugar-out-of-duty-concessions-for-nz-584552\"><u>70.03%<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;of imports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, Delhi has excluded 29.97% of bilateral goods from any duty concession, including ammunition, dairy, sugar, peas, chana and corn, among others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chief among the exclusion list is dairy, constituting whole milk, whey, cheese, cream and yoghurt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The exclusion aims to advance national agricultural productivity and boost farmers\u2019 revenue through minimum&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/insights\/prices\/india\/\"><u>prices of produce<\/u><\/a>, possible only through limiting imports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to India\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commerce.gov.in\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Fact-Sheet-NZ-FTA-dec-22-for-Website-ver2.pdf\"><u>Commerce Department<\/u><\/a>, the 70.03% FTA-applicable products cover 95% of bilateral trade value.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of these, 30% will have immediate duty elimination while 35.6% will undergo phased tariff removal extending from 3 to 10 years hence.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 30% that will gain immediate FTA treatment include wood, sheep\u2019s mutton, wool, textiles and raw hides.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Agricultural goods in the phased removal group range from vegetable oils to malt extract, while the non-agricultural are mostly electrical.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-new-zealand-s-total-concession\"><strong>New Zealand\u2019s Total Concession &nbsp;<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Auckland in its part offered no trade barriers by allowing all of Delhi\u2019s exports there free access.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Beforehand, NZ had maintained some 10% duty on such agri-processing goods as apparel and textile, among other merchandise.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Free market access ensures India\u2019s exports gain competitiveness within the Oceania nation by giving them parity with international goods enjoying similar treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>New Zealand will also serve as India\u2019s launching board to other markets nearby such as Australia and the South Seas. Manuka honey ($0.3 million in annual import value from NZ), will lose&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/news\/economy\/agriculture\/big-victory-for-indian-farmers-lies-in-blueprint-of-countrys-fta-with-new-zealand\/articleshow\/126119457.cms\"><u>75%&nbsp;<\/u><\/a>of current duty in 5 years\u2019 time. However, any purchases beyond the changing annual quotas will see import prices rise from $20\/kg to $30\/kg. NZ\u2019s apples, valued at $32.4 million annually, will see reduction of current duty by 25% in 6 years. Kiwi fruit ($16.9 million in import value), on the other hand, will realise 0% duty by the 6<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;year.
