{"id":24001,"date":"2025-12-16T13:31:00","date_gmt":"2025-12-16T13:31:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/?p=24001"},"modified":"2025-12-16T13:31:01","modified_gmt":"2025-12-16T13:31:01","slug":"new-factory-scales-up-production-of-white-sugar-in-guyana","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/2025\/12\/16\/new-factory-scales-up-production-of-white-sugar-in-guyana\/","title":{"rendered":"New factory scales up production of white sugar in Guyana\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Former South American sugar capital, Guyana, is chasing waning production glory by building a white sugar factory in January 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The US$20-million Demerara Sugar Refinery Inc (DSRI) at Wales will process a maximum of 100 tonnes per annum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although only a trickle compared to brown sugar, the additional white sugar will help meet growing demand in beverage industries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the Minister of Finance Dr. Ashni Singh, the entire Caribbean Community and Common Market (CARICOM) utilizes&nbsp;<a href=\"Tea &#10;W&#10;No  &#10;B&#10;Statistics &#10;Ch&#10;How?&#10;C&#10;Year&#9;Export Value\u00a0&#10;2023&#9;$6.13 million&#10;2022&#9;$6.23 million&#10;2021&#9;$4.86 million&#10;2020&#9;$3.97 million&#10;2019&#9;$4.66 million&#10;Fig: s&#10;&#10;How?&#10;&#10;T\"><u>200,000 tonnes<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;of white sugar annually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>CARICOM member, Guyana, imports 15,000 tonnes of white sugar worth over US$13.5 million annually, depending on reigning&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/insights\/prices\/guyana\/sugar\/\"><u>prices<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cutting this reliance is among the reasons why SUCRO Ltd from the United States and GAICO Construction are building DSRI factory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although the government has hailed this private venture by enabling ease of establishment, it has no financial stake in it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The sugar workers union known as GAWU in its part has welcomed the project, the kind it has been championing since 2016.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-production-white-out\"><strong>Production White-out<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>2016 marked the decline of Guyana\u2019s fabled sugar industry that since the 17<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;century had chiefly supplied the United States and Europe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Annual production fell by 18.7% in 2015-16, even as traditional markets looked for other sources or alternative sweeteners. By 2022, production was down to&nbsp;<a href=\"#data\/QCL\"><u>46,985 tonnes<\/u><\/a>, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuyCuCo) suffered the blunt of this historical output retreat for it incurred debts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/jare.org.gy\/overview-guyana-sugar-industry\/\"><u>University of Guyana<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;report cites GuyCuCo\u2019s debt at 82 billion Guyana dollars ($386.9 million) in 2015 due to production contraction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The government initially came to the rescue by reducing processing efforts in sugar estates at Wales and Skeldon.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hence, the upcoming white sugar factory may not reclaim former production glory in Guyana but will refocus the industry. The stats below offer a general preview of the historical industry landscape.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-guyana-sugar-statistics\"><strong>Guyana Sugar&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>Statistics&nbsp;<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Guyana was once a fabled sugar capital of the Caribbean where thousands of workers, including immigrants, used to work. It used to produce over&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/jare.org.gy\/overview-guyana-sugar-industry\/\"><u>340,000 tonnes<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;of sugar from over 113,474 acres in its best years. By 2018, production was down to 100,000 tonnes, which more than halved by 2022. For half a century,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/jare.org.gy\/overview-guyana-sugar-industry\/\"><u>50%&nbsp;<\/u><\/a>of export volumes and 70% of turnover used to come from Europe. Then this changed post-1994 when in a single fiscal year profits plummeted by 4 billion Guyana dollars ($19 million). This was partially due to the onset of alternative sweeteners in the U.S., which turned to domestic raw materials like corn syrup.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How does Guyana utilize brown and white sugar?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Brown sugar makes not only raw sugar but sugar sticks and other value added products while white sugar sweetens drinks.
