{"id":23989,"date":"2025-12-15T09:31:04","date_gmt":"2025-12-15T09:31:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/?p=23989"},"modified":"2025-12-15T09:31:06","modified_gmt":"2025-12-15T09:31:06","slug":"aromatic-rice-production-in-uganda-turns-reality-with-new-home-varieties","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/2025\/12\/15\/aromatic-rice-production-in-uganda-turns-reality-with-new-home-varieties\/","title":{"rendered":"Aromatic rice production in Uganda turns reality with new home varieties"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The National Agricultural Research Organisation (NARO) of Uganda and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) are developing homegrown aromatic rice (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/plants\/poaceae\/oryza-sativa\/\"><em><u><em>oryza sativa<\/em><\/u><\/em><\/a>) varieties to boost production.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the NARO\u2019s cereals program leader Dr. Jimmy Lamo on December 11, 2025, the new varieties currently await governmental approval.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The initiative partly seeks to benefit farmers by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/nilepost.co.ug\/agriculture\/310106\/uganda-nears-breakthrough-with-locally-developed-aromatic-rice-varieties\"><u>reducing costly basmati&nbsp;<\/u><\/a>imports under the Promotion of Sustainable Rice Development (ECO-PRiDe Project).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Lamo echoes this vision by saying that aromatic rice monopolizes local markets yet home cultivars are low-yielding.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is why the new varieties have keyed in not only aroma but quality seeds that will &nbsp;enhance yields and withstand pests.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The ECO-PRiDE Project\u2019s chief advisor Dr. Kisho Miyamoto echoed this view by championing Japan\u2019s rice expertise in Uganda through&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ugstandard.com\/uganda-nears-release-of-new-aromatic-rice-varieties-developed-with-jica\/\"><u>quality seed deliveries<\/u><\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Real-time tests to evaluate varietal feasibility of the new rice seeds are happening across the industry &#8211; from farmers to millers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The NARO is clearing final huddles, including submitting the novel cultivars to the National Variety Release Committee for approval. &nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-aromatic-rice-demand-imports-equal-production\"><strong>Aromatic\u00a0Rice\u00a0Demand: Imports Equal Production\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Upon approval, the aromatic varieties could altogether replace basmati imports from foreign sources, according to the research team.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2023, for example, production tailed off at 260,000 tonnes while imports equaled them at 241,962 tonnes, per the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/wits.worldbank.org\/trade\/comtrade\/en\/country\/UGA\/year\/2023\/tradeflow\/Imports\/partner\/ALL\/product\/1006\"><u>World Bank.<\/u><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tanzania supplied the lion\u2019s share at 231,150 tonnes, with Pakistan and India following with 8,337 and 1,350 tonnes, respectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The two south Asian countries in particular raise the import bill for they supply Uganda with expensive aromatic basmati and supa rice. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most of the suppliers of local rice are smallholder farmers who make up 80% of all growers nationwide.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These growers often cope with occasional governmental bans on farming in the wetlands, particularly in 2021. For this reason, rice self-sufficiency in Uganda was at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/cgspace.cgiar.org\/items\/1b8bc85b-9d8d-4663-859c-d39a4bd5aa79\"><u>67%&nbsp;<\/u><\/a>in 2023, according to the CGIAR. And rice consumption in Uganda is rising faster than production, per the following industry data on all varieties, including aromatic.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-uganda-rice-statistics\"><strong>Uganda Rice&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>Statistics&nbsp;<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Rice is one of the staple foods of Uganda. The grain represents&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/theafricandreams.com\/rice-cultivation-in-uganda\/\"><u>15%<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;of the annual cereal harvest, as of 2021. This makes Uganda one of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irri.org\/where-we-work\/uganda\"><u>top 5<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;rice-producing nations in East and Southern Africa. But the country imports as much as it produces. This is because consumption has been growing by 4% a year in the early 2020s, against sharply fluctuating production. While 2022\u2019s output hit 347,000 tonnes, 2023\u2019s slumped to&nbsp;<a href=\"#data\/QCL\"><u>260,000 tonnes,<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;according to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Low yield rates in rain-fed areas are the primary causes of production stagnation as they average&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/cgspace.cgiar.org\/items\/1b8bc85b-9d8d-4663-859c-d39a4bd5aa79\"><u>1.3 tonnes&nbsp;<\/u><\/a>a hectare (2023). These rain-dependant areas in eastern and northern Uganda however have a productivity capacity of 5.5 tonnes a hectare. They supply&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/riceforafrica.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/uga_nrds2.pdf\"><u>90%<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;of the national rice harvest while the highly productive irrigated areas manage a 10% share. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a result, imports continue to saturate local markets, averaging&nbsp;241,962 tonnes (2023), according to the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/wits.worldbank.org\/trade\/comtrade\/en\/country\/UGA\/year\/2023\/tradeflow\/Imports\/partner\/ALL\/product\/1006\"><u>World Bank.<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;This means budgeting each year for over&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/theafricandreams.com\/rice-cultivation-in-uganda\/\"><u>$23.2 million<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;in import bills. As mitigation, the government considers investing&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/riceforafrica.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/uga_nrds2.pdf\"><u>$95 million<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;in seed, fertilizer, irrigation and new cultivar research, to attain self-sufficiency.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How much rice do people in Uganda eat per year?<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The rice per capita in Uganda is the lowest in East Africa at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/worldpopulationreview.com\/country-rankings\/rice-consumption-by-country\"><u>14.2 kg<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;per person per year, as of 2022. Conversely, neighbors Kenya (21.5 kg\/per capita, 2022) and Tanzania (38.5 kg\/per capita, 2022) have bigger appetites. In rice consumption volume terms, Uganda ranks 53<sup>rd<\/sup>&nbsp;highest in the world.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Does rice production fluctuate much in Uganda?<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Uganda records sharp historical fluctuations in annual rice output due to poor yield rates and pests.
