{"id":23898,"date":"2025-11-28T13:28:08","date_gmt":"2025-11-28T13:28:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/?p=23898"},"modified":"2025-11-28T13:28:09","modified_gmt":"2025-11-28T13:28:09","slug":"the-southwest-nova-scotia-lobster-season-dawns-6-month-harvest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/2025\/11\/28\/the-southwest-nova-scotia-lobster-season-dawns-6-month-harvest\/","title":{"rendered":"The Southwest Nova Scotia lobster season dawns 6-month harvest \u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Lobstermen in Southwest Nova Scotia cast their gear into waters on \u2018Dumping Day\u2019 November 24, 2025, ushering a six-month lobster trapping season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By the time the exciting \u2018day 1\u2019 was nearing its climax at midnight, fishers were busy hauling in their initial catch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This winter lobstering marathon is taking place in Lobster Fishing Areas&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/news.novascotia.ca\/en\/2025\/11\/24\/first-day-lobster-season-southwest-nova-scotia\"><u>(LFA) 33 and 34<\/u><\/a>, from Yarmouth County through Halifax.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The LFA 33 fishery, which encapsulates Halifax County\u2019s Cow Bay westward to Baccaro Point, opened at 7 a.m. local time.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>LFA 34 had opened two hours earlier at 5 a.m., from Baccaro Point to Shelburne County west and Digby County near Yarmouth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unlike recent seasons, the current one escaped postponement due to a timely meeting between fishing stakeholders and authorities on November 23.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Initial catch reports on the 25<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;had fishers at Lockeport citing&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.saltwire.com\/nova-scotia\/tri-county-vangaurd\/commercial-lobster-fishery-underway-in-southwestern-nova-scotia\"><u>low early hauls<\/u><\/a>, mostly consisting soft-shelled lobster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-lucrativeness-meets-conservation-in-the-southwest\"><strong>Lucrativeness Meets Conservation in the Southwest &nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>There is hope however that this lobster season might reprise 2024\u2019s financial gains for southwest Nova Scotia, amid conservation efforts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2024, the two LFOs landed lobster worth C$540 million ($384.53 million), invoking the wider province\u2019s vast shellfish fortunes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sailing to recoup 2024 turnover were over 1,400 vessels that have already set their traps, per <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1015thehawk.com\/2025\/11\/24\/136811\/\"><u>1015 the Hawk<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;news.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To help conserve the seasonal bounty, the Government of Nova Scotia cautioned fishers to observe safety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From 2026 to date there have been over 1,700 safety drills, some of them taking place on board fishing vessels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On top of that, the entire province helps preserve the shellfish resource by removing illegal traps. Between June and September 2025, authorities put 4,400 lobster back into the sea after&nbsp;<a href=\" www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/2025\/09\/08\/the-nova-scotia-lobster-fishery-stamps-out-ou\"><u>dislodging 1,000 illegal traps<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;off the Atlantic coast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It seems like the conservation efforts are paying off for the entire province earned C$1.3 billion ($925.73 million) from lobster exports in 2024. The statistics below extend the points further by assessing provincial landings in Canada.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-nova-scotia-and-provincial-canada-lobster-landings-statistics\"><strong>Nova Scotia and Provincial Canada Lobster Landings&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>Statistics&nbsp;<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Nova Scotia on Canada\u2019s southeast coast is a leading source of lobster by volume, which peaked at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/novascotia.ca\/fish\/commercial-fisheries\/industry-overview\/\"><u>51,000 tonnes&nbsp;<\/u><\/a>annually (2014). Landings had shrunk to 39,817 tonnes by 2023, however, according to the Fisheries and Oceans Canada (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dfo-mpo.gc.ca\/stats\/commercial\/land-debarq\/sea-maritimes\/s2023pq-eng.htm\"><u>DFO<\/u><\/a>). But this was still the highest catch nationally, with runner-up Prince Edward Island catching half this volume at 18,941 tonnes. In the 2022-23 season, for instance, it earned&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.canadaaction.ca\/canadian-lobster-fishing-sector-facts\"><u>C$450 million<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;($314.3 million) from lobster, just behind New Brunswick\u2019s C$693.1 million ($484.1 million).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In terms of trade, Nova Scotia (NS) commands a vibrant retail lobster sector that boasts over&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/novascotia.ca\/fish\/commercial-fisheries\/industry-overview\/\"><u>160<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;buyer-and-seller companies, as of 2014.
