The move could slash U.S.\u2019 beef output by at least 7-9% &#8211; and it is already creating market uncertainty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The announcement on November 21, 2025 continues to draw shock reactions from the sector.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tyson\u2019s plans a January 2026 shutdown on the Lexington-Nebraska plant, home to 3,200 workers in a city of 11,000 people.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The entity tersely links ageing infrastructure that could be costly to modernize along with financial losses to the move.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are also plans to remove one of two working shifts supporting&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usnews.com\/news\/best-states\/nebraska\/articles\/2025-11-24\/tysons-beef-plant-closure-in-nebraska-will-impact-a-reliant-town-and-ranchers-nationwide\"><u>1,700 jobs<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;in another plant in Amarillo, TX.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Lexington abattoir will have the most impact because it manages the slaughter of 5,000 animals daily and it\u2019s demographically important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rarely does a processing plant change a town as Tyson\u2019s Beef did when it started operations in 1990 in Lexington. It went on to employ almost 1\/3<sup>rd<\/sup>&nbsp;of the residents, and helped nearly double the city\u2019s population via immigrant recruits.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-tyson-s-uncertainty-brazil-tariff-removal-affect-cattle-prices\"><strong>Tyson\u2019s Uncertainty &amp; Brazil Tariff Removal Affect Cattle Prices<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/insights\/prices\/united-states-of-america\/live-cattle\/\"><u>cattle rates<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;in the United States fell in the week of the announcement due to uncertainty. Support came from the removal of Brazil\u2019s beef import tariff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cash prices lost by $4-5 a hundredweight (cwt), to a maximum $224\/cwt in the southern states, per the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.beefmagazine.com\/market-news\/softness-persists-in-us-cattle-markets\"><u>Beef Magazine<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The northern states meanwhile shed $7\/cwt week-on-week, to around $218 a cwt on cash payment basis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although the weekly slaughter rose to 585,000 head, the count was 50,000 below those of the corresponding week in 2024.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tyson\u2019s announcement means another 5,000 head of cattle absent in slaughter daily after the Lexington exit. This could perhaps have a long-term price comeback effect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For now however focus is on Brazil after the United States scrapped an earlier additional duty on beef imports.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Upon which, live futures of U.S.\u2019 cattle lost by $1.70 per cwt weekly by November 21, as traders courted oncoming glut.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Brazil now looks on to supply the bulk of some 20% of the annual beef orders by the U.S.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2024, the South American country accounted for&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/wtop.com\/national\/2025\/11\/tysons-beef-plant-closure-in-nebraska-will-impact-a-reliant-town-and-ranchers-nationwide\/\"><u>24%<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;of all federal beef imports that year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite Brazil\u2019s post-tariff comeback, Tyson\u2019s shocker continues to generate attention. Clay Patton, the VP of Lexington area\u2019s Chamber of Commerce summed up the upcoming closures as a \u201cgut punch.\u201d And as the following stats indicate, it is federal plants like this one that drive domestic beef supply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-united-states-domestic-federal-beef-supply-statistics\"><strong>United States\u2019 Domestic Federal Beef Supply&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>Statistics&nbsp;<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Although the United States avails&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usnews.com\/news\/best-states\/nebraska\/articles\/2025-11-24\/tysons-beef-plant-closure-in-nebraska-will-impact-a-reliant-town-and-ranchers-nationwide\"><u>20%&nbsp;<\/u><\/a>of its beef supplies from foreign origins, national sources are the real measures of supply health.&nbsp;In 2024, the country produced 26.98 billion pounds of beef at home and expected to produce&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/194687\/us-total-beef-production-since-2000\/\"><u>24.5 billion pounds&nbsp;<\/u><\/a>in 2026. This high volume makes the United States the biggest beef producer worldwide.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Statewide, Texas leads output at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/worldpopulationreview.com\/state-rankings\/beef-production-by-state\"><u>6.2 billion pounds&nbsp;<\/u><\/a>(2023), followed by Nebraska at 5.6 billion pounds.
