{"id":23725,"date":"2025-11-04T13:52:13","date_gmt":"2025-11-04T13:52:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/?p=23725"},"modified":"2025-11-04T13:54:32","modified_gmt":"2025-11-04T13:54:32","slug":"to-save-rice-in-texas-pesticide-researchers-race-against-time","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/2025\/11\/04\/to-save-rice-in-texas-pesticide-researchers-race-against-time\/","title":{"rendered":"To save rice in Texas, pesticide researchers race against time"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Texas ratoon or second rice crop is homing in but could slash drastically unless researchers combat rice delphacids.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Researchers at the Texas A&amp;M AgriLife Research and Extension Center at Beaumont so far are making efforts to contain the invasive pest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The team cites that two insecticides in use are apparently not perfect, hence the need to explore extra solutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a result, ratoon yields this season could decline by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/spectrumlocalnews.com\/tx\/south-texas-el-paso\/news\/2025\/11\/03\/invasive-insect-threatens-texas-rice-crop\"><u>40 to 50%<\/u><\/a>, per Dr. Steve Liscombe, executive director at The Rice Foundation, via Spectrum Local News.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ratoons are shoot regrowths that succeed the first harvest typically around August, and produce Texas\u2019 second typical long grain rice harvest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But since 2015, delphacids have been invading mainly this secondhand crop on the Texas Rice Belt.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lying on the upper coast, the belt occupies some 75,000 hectares at peak years, according to the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/texasagriculture.gov\/Portals\/0\/forms\/MKT\/TDA%20Rice%20Commodity%20Card.pdf\"><u>Texas Agriculture Department&nbsp;<\/u><\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The toll of rice delphacids on such a huge swathe is usually visible because the pests cause \u2018hopper burn\u2019 after sucking grain nutrients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Originally from Latin America and the Caribbean, the pest also causes stalks to collapse and spreads the rice hoja blanca virus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-epa-pesticide-exemption-average-crop\"><strong>EPA Pesticide Exemption, Average Crop &nbsp;<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in October 2025&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/texasagriculture.gov\/News-Events\/Article\/10583\/Commissioner-Sid-Miller-Announces-Renewal-of-Pesticide-Exemption-to-Protect-Tex\"><u>authorized<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;the use of a rare pesticide, giving hope for average seasonal yields.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following the permission, farmers can spray 170,000 acres of rice fields in 19 state counties with Endigo\u00aeZCX.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Counties that enjoy the quarantine exemption to use the pesticide include Austin, Jefferson, Colorado, Wharton, among 16 others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And despite the devastation, forecasts were putting August yield rates at 8,000-9,000 pounds an acre, versus 7,670 pounds in 2023.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The only shortcoming this time round is that cultivated area was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ssricenews.com\/rice-news\/top-news\/texas-rice-harvest-in-progress-average-yields-expected.html\"><u>down 6,000 acres,<\/u><\/a>\u00a0to about 143,000 acres.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Harvest pressure also downed&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/insights\/prices\/united-states-of-america\/rice\/\"><u>rice prices<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;in August to about $12.75 a hundredweight (cwt), versus at least $14\/cwt in other seasons.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The planted area could still expand by at least 20,000 acres in 2026 owing to heavy saturation on abandoned fields. For similar bits on production averages, skim the statistics section below.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-texas-rice-statistics\"><strong>Texas Rice&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>Statistics&nbsp;<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Texas originally started commercial rice production\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/usriceproducers.com\/state-associate\/texas\/\"><u>in 1863<\/u><\/a>, although the crop had reached its shores from Madagascar around 1685. In the early years, the state was the second biggest source of rice in the United States after Louisiana. Today, however, the state ranks 5<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0nationwide, with an output topping\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nass.usda.gov\/Statistics_by_State\/Texas\/Publications\/Current_News_Release\/2024_Rls\/spr-crop-prod-10-2024%20.pdf\"><u>14.6 million hundredweight\u00a0<\/u><\/a>(CWT), as of 2020.
