{"id":23674,"date":"2025-10-27T09:32:05","date_gmt":"2025-10-27T09:32:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/?p=23674"},"modified":"2025-10-27T09:32:08","modified_gmt":"2025-10-27T09:32:08","slug":"hass-avocados-from-peru-secure-maiden-access-into-the-philippines","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/2025\/10\/27\/hass-avocados-from-peru-secure-maiden-access-into-the-philippines\/","title":{"rendered":"Hass avocados from Peru secure maiden access into the Philippines"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Philippines has signed a working plan with Peru to officially import Hass avocados from the South American country for the first time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a statement on October 25, 2025, the Philippines\u2019 Bureau of Plant Industry (BPI) championed the exchange with Peru\u2019s agricultural health department.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The BPI said that the working framework will first target the meeting of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.philstar.com\/business\/2025\/10\/26\/2482474\/philippines-opens-market-peru-avocados\"><u>phytosanitary stipulations<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;to insure produce quality for consumers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the BPI, this is also an opportunity to diversify the PH\u2019s avocado market\u2019s richness through various import sources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pebbly purplish-green Hass avocados (<a href=\" www.selinawamucii.com\/plants\/lauraceae\/persea-americana\/\"><em><u><em>Persea Americana<\/em><\/u><\/em><\/a><em>&nbsp;var. Hass)<\/em>&nbsp;apparently have a wide following locally due to their sweet taste profile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Peru\u2019s entry signs off months of bilateral technical deliberations, with the Department of Agriculture (DA) finally allowing in imports for diversity reasons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Peru is among the largest growers of the cultivar in the southern Hemisphere, besides being among the nations that pioneered avocado cultivation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Acreage under Hass in Peru grew sevenfold in the 2007-21 period from 5,000 hectares (ha) to 65,000 ha, per the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/hassavocadoboard.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/hab-marketers-country-profiles-2024-peru.pdf\"><u>Hass Avocado Board<\/u><\/a>. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-do-hass-avocados-grow-in-the-philippines\"><strong>Do Hass avocados Grow in the Philippines? &nbsp;<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Philippines in its part already cultivates Hass in places like Bohol in the Central Visayas, the Cagayan Valley and Southern Luzon.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018Abokado,\u2019 as residents call it, is a relatively new fruit in the country, having arrived as late as the 1890s.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, many varieties exist that include Hass which grows in Mindanao in the country\u2019s south, particularly in Davao and Bukidnon.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Philippines also began exporting the matured variety to South Korea in September 2023 and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.da.gov.ph\/philippine-fresh-avocados-gain-access-to-japan-market-first-shipment-sent-from-mindanao\/\"><u>to Japan<\/u><\/a>\u00a0in November 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although this cultivar commands generally higher prices in Asia than elsewhere, its use in Asian salads has insured its market longevity there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hass avocados have crossed many borders including Peru and the Philippines since California pioneered them from the mid-1920s. Today the cultivar makes up the bulk of the global commercial avocado market scene. And as the statistics below point out, Peru is a major producer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-peru-avocado-production-statistics\"><strong>Peru Avocado Production&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>Statistics&nbsp;<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Peru was one of the earliest cradles of avocados in as early as the 1400s when the conquistadors brought them here. By 1995, the country was averaging a production of 100,000 tonnes per annum for mostly local consumption. But by 2023, the fruit had become the third highest agricultural export, worth&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/hassavocadoboard.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/hab-marketers-country-profiles-2024-peru.pdf\"><u>US$1.065 billion<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;or 7.1% of the GDP.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Hass cultivar constitutes the bulk of the commercial avocado output in the South American country.
