{"id":23630,"date":"2025-10-17T07:31:43","date_gmt":"2025-10-17T07:31:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/?p=23630"},"modified":"2025-10-17T07:39:49","modified_gmt":"2025-10-17T07:39:49","slug":"africa-new-darling-of-rice-from-vietnam-as-asia-demand-wanes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/2025\/10\/17\/africa-new-darling-of-rice-from-vietnam-as-asia-demand-wanes\/","title":{"rendered":"Africa new darling of rice from Vietnam as Asia demand wanes"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Vietnam is slowly but surely tilting its rice export axis to West Africa where trade is stable amid waning demand in southeast Asia.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Turning the spoke is the indefinite<a href=\"https:\/\/en.vietstock.vn\/2025\/10\/africa-emerges-as-new-market-for-vietnamese-rice-970-622615.htm\"><u>&nbsp;import moratorium<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;by Vietnam\u2019s biggest rice trade partner, the Philippines, in September 2025.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Customs, rice dispatches to Manila this September slumped by 93.3% while the value fell 92.6%, month-on-month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The abrupt stoppage by the PH in order to&nbsp;<a href=\" www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/2025\/01\/09\/the-philippines-rice-authorities-race-to-fix-import-prices\"><u>tame domestic prices<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;coincided with quota limitations by the second largest importer, Indonesia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This double whipping left Vietnam nursing a surplus, causing exports for September to plummet by 47% monthly, to 466,800 tonnes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a result, export prices by the country fell drastically as home excess forced shippers to sell at below par.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By October 15, 2025, however, export rates for 25% broken grain at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/e.vietfood.org.vn\/world-prices-15-10-2025\/\"><u>$350 a tonne<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;(t) were surpassing those for India and Thailand. For 100% broken rice, Vietnam\u2019s &nbsp;$310\/t was trending lower than India\u2019s ($321\/t) and Thailand\u2019s ($316\/t).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-steadiness-from-west-africa\"><strong>Steadiness from West Africa<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, Nigeria, Ivory Coast, Senegal and Ghana showed steady purchases from the southeast Asia nation before quarter 3, 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ghana imported 662,000 tonnes worth $373 million from January to August, 95% above 2024\u2019s, per the Vietnam Food Association (VFA).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The same ascribed to Ivory Coast, whose 8-month import totals rose 156% year-on-year to 754,000 tonnes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vrice\u2019s marketing director, Phan Van Co, links the Africa market export surge to low policy risks and capital\/logistics strengths.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Governments in Africa also favor bilateral governmental contracts, another thing that reduces private trade breaches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, is Africa the next major venue of quality rice from Vietnam, especially jasmine? Will it it redeem falling&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/insights\/prices\/vietnam\/rice\/\"><u>Viet rice export prices<\/u><\/a>? The following statistics review this question in the Vietnam context.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-vietnam-and-africa-rice-trade-statistics\"><strong>Vietnam and Africa Rice Trade&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>Statistics&nbsp;<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Vietnam is the world\u2019s fourth biggest rice exporter at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldstopexports.com\/rice-exports-country\/\"><u>$4 billion<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;or 10.3% of the global export value share (2024). Africa, meanwhile, seconds Asia as major rice consumer, with 8 of its nations in the top 20 rice-consuming nations. In 2022, Nigeria led continental annual consumption quantity at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/worldpopulationreview.com\/country-rankings\/rice-consumption-by-country\"><u>7.211 million tonnes<\/u><\/a>, at position 11 worldwide. Vietnam, with 22.399 million tonnes in annual consumption quantity, came 6<sup>th<\/sup>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rice trade between Vietnam and Africa owes primarily to the fact that Vietnam produces surplus and exports half of production. Vietnam, for instance, saw export rates for 5% broken rice plummet to 2-month lows mid-October 2025, to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.livemint.com\/market\/commodities\/asia-rice-thai-prices-extend-slump-to-18-year-low-as-demand-falters-11760664684388.html\"><u>$420<\/u><\/a>\/t. While Africa does not guarantee price improvement, its steady trade policies and strong logistics attract Vietnam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How much rice do select countries in West Africa consume per capita?<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the early 2020s, West Africa topped the global rice consumption per capita. Guinea in 2022 ranked 1<sup>st<\/sup>\u00a0continental and 10<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0global, with consumption at<a href=\"https:\/\/worldpopulationreview.com\/country-rankings\/rice-consumption-by-country\"><u>\u00a0162 kg<\/u><\/a>\u00a0per person per year.
