{"id":23574,"date":"2025-10-10T09:49:06","date_gmt":"2025-10-10T09:49:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/?p=23574"},"modified":"2025-10-10T09:51:43","modified_gmt":"2025-10-10T09:51:43","slug":"potato-prices-in-ukraine-edge-down-as-autumn-harvest-recovers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/2025\/10\/10\/potato-prices-in-ukraine-edge-down-as-autumn-harvest-recovers\/","title":{"rendered":"Potato prices in Ukraine edge down as autumn harvest recovers\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Despite the war entering its 1325<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0day early October 2025, Ukraine has seen its potato yields return to average while\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/insights\/prices\/ukraine\/potatoes\/\"><u>prices<\/u><\/a>\u00a0collapse.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thescottishfarmer.co.uk\/opinion\/25527151.ukraine-agriculture-updates-war-harvest-market-impact\/\"><u>Scottish Farmer<\/u><\/a>, weekly prices of table potatoes are $100 down\u00a0to $185-200 a tonne but still above 2024\u2019s rates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because of a quality hit from a few weeks of drought and fusarium wilt, some exporters are shipping 2024 reserves at losses. The premium shipping price was 12-24 hryvnia ($0.28-0.58) a kg or 12% below those of the week ending October 3.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Still, the weekly slip in pricing has not impacted year-on-year potato rates which are 25% above those of 2024.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thus the blame for the dip is&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/112.ua\/en\/v-ukraini-obvalilisa-cini-na-kartoplu-eksperti-poasnili-fenomen-62650\"><u>decreasing demand&nbsp;<\/u><\/a>in domestic wholesale and retail grocers across the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Analysts expect the price situation to worsen with ebbing quality 2024 reserves, forcing market saturation with this year\u2019s low quality surplus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Potatoes had <em>had<\/em> stable prices before October 7 at 12 hryvnia ($0.28) a kg despite other vegetables experiencing inflation, per\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/finway.com.ua\/en\/vegetable-prices-ukraine-rise-sharply\/\"><u>Finway UA<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Conversely, tomatoes led the vegetable rate hike with weekly rises of 5-7 hryvnia ($0.12-0.16) to a maximum 60 hryvnia ($1.45) a kg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-yield-and-quality-memory-lane\"><strong>Yield and Quality memory Lane<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Through the 1990s, Ukraine sustained a constant production of potatoes at between 16 and 21 million tonnes.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The output ebbed somewhat in the early war years 2022-24, before recovering currently in 2025.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Central Ukraine with its good soils for the tuber has particularly come back in the black, which is also true of most other areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The only issue is quality despite the motto \u201cquality counts\u201d having been the slogan for growers in the great \u201890s years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In July 2025, some 100 mm of rain poured over dry fields, drenching the crop and fostering crack and fusarium conditions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The country has almost finished reaping its high-quality potato crop and is harvesting low-quality ones as the 2024 stock depletes. As such, the highlights below recap the production history in Ukraine with a review on potato prices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-ukraine-potato-prices-and-production-statistics\"><strong><strong>Ukraine\u00a0<\/strong>Potato <strong>Prices<\/strong> and Production\u00a0Statistics\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Ukraine is the world\u2019s third largest potato-producing nation with output at nearly&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/worldpopulationreview.com\/country-rankings\/potatoes-production-by-country\"><u>20.9 million tonnes<\/u><\/a>, as of 2022, behind India and China. &nbsp;Each autumn, the Eastern European harvests an average 21 million tonnes of the tuber, which in turn impacts rates. In 2024, production dipped by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ubn.news\/ukraines-potato-production-decreases-forcing-record-breaking-prices\/\"><u>4 million tonnes<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;from 2023\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"#data\/QCL\"><u>21.36 million tonnes<\/u><\/a>, upon which prices hiked to 50&nbsp;hryvnia&nbsp;&nbsp;($1.20) a kg. A year later in early October 2025, the reverse was true: yields were up but prices conversely down to maximum&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/112.ua\/en\/v-ukraini-obvalilisa-cini-na-kartoplu-eksperti-poasnili-fenomen-62650\"><u>24&nbsp;<\/u>hryvnia&nbsp;<\/a>($0.57) a kg, as of October 10.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How do Ukraine\u2019s retail potato rates compare worldwide?<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By virtue of being a major producer, Ukraine\u2019s potatoes sell far less than the global average. According to data aggregator&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.numbeo.com\/cost-of-living\/country_price_rankings?itemId=112\"><u>Numbeo<\/u><\/a>, potatoes average $0.72 a kg in Ukraine or the 103<sup>rd<\/sup>&nbsp;position among 127 nations. In comparison, Iceland sells the same kg at $3.71.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Was Ukraine\u2019s potato production constant over time?<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From 1984 through the 1990s and in to the early 2020s, Ukraine has maintained near-similar potato production.
