{"id":23538,"date":"2025-10-07T13:36:29","date_gmt":"2025-10-07T13:36:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/?p=23538"},"modified":"2025-10-07T13:38:46","modified_gmt":"2025-10-07T13:38:46","slug":"the-new-brunswick-wild-blueberry-harvest-nears-twilight-at-a-trickle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/2025\/10\/07\/the-new-brunswick-wild-blueberry-harvest-nears-twilight-at-a-trickle\/","title":{"rendered":"The New Brunswick wild blueberry harvest nears twilight at a trickle"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>High temperatures could slash the culminating 2025 wild blueberry harvest in New Brunswick (NB), southeast Canada by 70% below average.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Weather forecasts on October 6 for Nova Scotia and NB put temperatures at between 20 and 30\u00baC, versus the month\u2019s norm of 15\u00baC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Regional wildfires also hindered the access of Crown (government) forests for two weeks in August, delaying the blueberry picking timeline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hence, Bleuts NB Blueberries\u2019 general manager Donald Arsenault summarized seasonal production to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/11466596\/unseasonably-warm-temperatures-drought-wildfire-maritimes\/\"><u>Global News Canada<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;as down to 20-24 million pounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Arsenault had earlier told CTV News Atlantic that this harvest will hardly attain the yearly median of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ctvnews.ca\/atlantic\/new-brunswick\/article\/nb-wild-blueberry-crop-drops-by-tens-of-millions-of-pounds-executive\/\"><u>68 million pounds<\/u><\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He added that since the crop contributes to livelihoods, output decreases could put farmers into dire financial straits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The general manager has already \u201cknocked on the government\u2019s door\u201d on their behalf while some growers have contemplated to sell their land.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The province\u2019s wild blueberry harvest runs from July through August on farms by 175 or so farmers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This ensemble takes up to five weeks to pick its berries, a situation that this year has extended to October due to wildfires.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-hope-through-crop-tourism\"><strong>Hope Through Crop Tourism&nbsp;<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>As the crop fails, growers can still fall back to their scenic fields, which attract hundreds of thousands of tourists.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Truman Blueberry Farms, for instance, drew above 100,000 visitors at one time, benefiting the surrounding hamlet of Aulac.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tourists come to see the wild and cultivated southern highbush blueberries (<a href=\" www.selinawamucii.com\/plants\/ericaceae\/vaccinium-corymbosum\/\"><em><u><em>V. corymbosum<\/em><\/u><\/em><\/a><em>)<\/em>&nbsp;prevalent from Mexico to Canada.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even as tourism injects communal growth, northeast NB\u2019s producers still drive the economy by accounting for 69% of provincial wild blueberry acreage.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Between 2017 and 2024, their crop added to the exponential 200% growth in blueberry contribution to the provincial economy. And as the stats below reveal, the New Brunswick wild blueberry economy is a revelation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-new-brunswick-wild-blueberry-statistics\"><strong>New Brunswick Wild Blueberry&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>Statistics&nbsp;<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Situated in southeastern Canada, New Brunswick is a maritime province famous for seafood and blueberry riches. The wild blueberry economy (including cultivated highbush varieties) carves out&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ctvnews.ca\/atlantic\/new-brunswick\/article\/nb-wild-blueberry-crop-drops-by-tens-of-millions-of-pounds-executive\/\"><u>68 million pound<\/u><\/a>s in peak production. It also brings&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/shunculture.com\/article\/when-is-blueberry-season-in-new-brunswick\"><u>C$81 million&nbsp;<\/u><\/a>($57,510) annually to the province\u2019s GDP, as of 2021. While primary sales represent the lion\u2019s share of the revenue, value-added products account for a solid 43% of the industry\u2019s earnings. This duo approach could generate C$72.9 million ($51,759) in direct earnings and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/shunculture.com\/article\/when-is-blueberry-season-in-new-brunswick\"><u>C$1.2 billion<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;($852 million) in GDP representation by 2033.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Do NB\u2019s wild blueberries trade globally?<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>New Brunswick sells the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/eastcoastmermaid.com\/2024\/08\/23\/mermaids-go-wild-over-these-new-brunswick-wild-blueberry-muffins\/\"><u>50 million pounds<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;of wild blueberries it produces annually to local and foreign markets. &nbsp;As of 2021, the province had 30 external markets, alongside domestic destinations in Atlantic Canada. From just 175 growers, the crop supports thousands of jobs, which might hit the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/shunculture.com\/article\/when-is-blueberry-season-in-new-brunswick\"><u>10,000<\/u><\/a>-mark in 2033.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How was production in 2025, historically?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Preliminary forecasts for 2025 production in early October were at maximum 24 million pounds.
