{"id":23172,"date":"2025-09-08T11:54:20","date_gmt":"2025-09-08T11:54:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/?p=23172"},"modified":"2025-09-08T11:55:12","modified_gmt":"2025-09-08T11:55:12","slug":"the-nova-scotia-lobster-fishery-stamps-out-out-of-season-harvests","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/2025\/09\/08\/the-nova-scotia-lobster-fishery-stamps-out-out-of-season-harvests\/","title":{"rendered":"The Nova Scotia lobster fishery stamps out out-of-season harvests"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Between June 1 and early September 2025, lobster authorities in Nova Scotia, southeast Canada had removed 1,000 traps for placement out-of-season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Fisheries Department recounted that by September 1 it had dislodged the thousand traps and freed&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/11390634\/dfo-seize-lobster-traps-nova-scotia-arrests\/\"><u>4,400 lobster<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This follows the end of the<a href=\" www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/2025\/07\/21\/main-lobster-season-in-canada-culminates\"><u>&nbsp;main commercial season<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;on the Atlantic coast in June, with the next starting December.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the lull period, members of the First Nations tribes can continue fishing but cannot sell their catches commercially.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is not clear whether the arrests were to do with fishers who sold their hauls or outsiders fishing in tribal waters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On July 31, officers detained 6 illegal fishers in Yarmouth County while on August 27 arrested four more on St. Mary\u2019s Bay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Under a 1990 precedent of a Supreme Court of Canada ruling, indigenous fisheries are only accessible to members of First Nations. These fishers, however, cannot sell their hauls during the commercial off-season.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The First Nations enjoy this privilege because they have traditionally depended on fishing for subsistence and for carrying out ceremonies.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-florida-too\"><strong>Florida, too<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The same situation affected fishers in Florida, who in their part are coping with immigrant arrests in their midst.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsminimalist.com\/articles\/florida-lobster-fishermen-face-economic-disruption-from-immigration-raids-and-tariffs-468f465b\"><u>New Minimalist<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;on September 6, 2025, crew raids on boats to identify illegal immigrants are affecting lobstering activites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Under the Trump administration, illegal immigrants from nearby Latin American origins are either charged at court or deported.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is happening during the main lobster season in the Sunshine State, which runs from August 6 to December 10.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Florida, unlike Nova Scotia, mainly lands spiny lobster versus Canada\u2019s world-beating&nbsp;<em>Homarus Americanus&nbsp;<\/em>species<em>.<\/em>&nbsp;And as the following statistics indicate, the southwest Canada province is one of the powerhouses of the crawfish, nationally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-nova-scotia-lobster-statistics\"><strong>Nova Scotia Lobster&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>Statistics&nbsp;<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Nova Scotia is a province on the southwest of Canada on the Atlantic coast. Its fisheries fall along Canada\u2019s 26a to 35 licensed&nbsp;fishing areas (<a href=\"https:\/\/lobsterfromcanada.com\/en\/the-world-of-canadian-lobster\/\"><u>LFAs<\/u><\/a>). It is one of the leading hubs of lobster not just nationally but globally. According to the province\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/novascotia.ca\/fish\/commercial-fisheries\/industry-overview\/\"><u>Fisheries &amp; Aquaculture department<\/u><\/a>, the province lands around 51,000 tonnes of lobster annually, as of 2014. This represents around $570 million in annual revenue (2014) or three-quarters of the total export value of national lobster exports. Most of this revenue comes from the bottom of the ocean where the fishers place their traps with baits.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Where do Nova Scotia\u2019s fishers sell their lobster?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In&nbsp;any given year, about&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/novascotia.ca\/fish\/commercial-fisheries\/industry-overview\/\"><u>60%&nbsp;<\/u><\/a>of lobster catches from Nova Scotia end up in the United States. The rest either sells in other provinces within Canada or undergoes non-commercial domestic consumption by the First Nations tribes.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Do lobster sell well in Nova Scotia<\/strong>?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Seasonal prices are the mandate of the Fish, Food and Allied Workers (FFAW) and the Lobster Processors Association. Market prices in Nova Scotia mostly fall between C$8 and 15 per pound in normal times. During low demand, prices can fall to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/nova-scotia\/atlantic-canada-lobster-industry-low-prices-global-economy-1.7536269\"><u>C$6.50 a pound<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;as happened in May 2025.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What is the lobster export value in Canada?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The lobster export value in Canada totaled 87,189 tonnes in 2023 and 80,365 tonnes in 2024. \u00a0The industry\u2019s total trade value amounted to $2,641,169 in 2023, according to the\u00a0<a href=\"#regional\"><u>government of Canada<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Between June 1 and early September 2025, lobster authorities in Nova Scotia, southeast Canada had removed 1,000 traps for placement out-of-season.
