{"id":23146,"date":"2025-09-03T13:37:41","date_gmt":"2025-09-03T13:37:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/?p=23146"},"modified":"2025-09-03T13:44:20","modified_gmt":"2025-09-03T13:44:20","slug":"namibia-on-course-to-feeding-itself-through-green-schemes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/2025\/09\/03\/namibia-on-course-to-feeding-itself-through-green-schemes\/","title":{"rendered":"Namibia on course to feeding itself through Green Schemes"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>State-run farms under the Green Schemes program in Namibia are elevating food self-sufficiency following strong presidential commitment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah on September 1, 2025 finished her Green Schemes\u2019 tour at Unam Ogongo Campus in the country\u2019s north.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She said that a nation that can\u2019t feed itself&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.namibiansun.com\/local-news\/president-urges-nation-to-boost-agriculture2025-09-03168974\"><u>is bereft of respect,<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;and thus the impetus to modernize local agriculture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One such modern project is the rice initiative at Ogongo whose many gains include sustainable production with minimal waste.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here, solar irrigation takes the center stage hand-in-hand with soil monitoring technology that keeps water supply optimal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another similar project that&nbsp;Nandi-Ndaitwah&nbsp;toured is the University of Namibia\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thebrief.com.na\/2025\/08\/green-schemes-show-progress-but-challenges-remain-nandi-ndaitwah\/\"><u>Kalimbeza Rice Project<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;on the banks of the Zambezi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A collaboration with a higher education institution from Indonesia, Kalimbeza hosts 229 hectares (ha),150 ha of which under paddy. The 2024-25 season yielded 108 tonnes of the grain from 38 ha. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The president vowed to prioritize the Zambezi basin and&nbsp;<a href=\" www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/2024\/05\/08\/musese-in-namibia-to-harvest-4000-tons-of-maize\"><u>maize-rich Kavango West<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;and East as continental-level food hubs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kavango East hosts the Shadikongoro Irrigation Green Scheme, which the president recently found better than in her March 2024 inspection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She however delineated high electric costs and lack of in-house harvesters at&nbsp;Shadikongoro&nbsp;as challenges that impact harvest timings.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Still in Kavango East is the Ndonga Linena project, whose 1,000 hectares&nbsp;presidential assessment found&nbsp;utilizable by 2026. The mega zone will also allocate orchards and groves for fruits in places where crops perform poorly.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The concerted campaign towards food security is bearing fruit for in 2024, Namibia attained a food sufficiency record of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.namibian.com.na\/food-self-sufficiency-hits-45-for-first-time-in-15-years\/\"><u>45%<\/u><\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Conversely, the mid-2000s had a self-sufficiency rate of only 20% for most agronomic crops, mostly cereals.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The question now remains how far the multi-million Namibian dollar Green Schemes will take Namibia beyond&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/insights\/prices\/namibia\/\"><u>costly<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;subsistence. The following statistics offer an attempt at finding food security answers from an assessment perspective.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-namibia-food-security-statistics\"><strong><strong>Namibia Food Security\u00a0Statistics\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Situated near the tip of Africa to the southwest, Namibia is a scenic but dry nation extending 824,268 square kilometers. Due to aridity, only 8% of the country receives&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fao.org\/namibia\/our-office\/namibia-at-a-glance\/en\"><u>over 500 mm<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;of rainfall per annum, mostly the northeast side. The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unfoodsystemshub.org\/docs\/unfoodsystemslibraries\/national-pathways\/namibia\/2021-09-14-en-policy_brief_namibia_food_systems.pdf?sfvrsn=b72601a3_1\"><u>UN Food Systems Hub&nbsp;<\/u><\/a>cites that 70% of Namibia\u2019s population depends on agricultural livelihoods, directly or indirectly. Despite the aridity, agriculture still accounts for a mammoth 23% of all employment chances nationwide.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In economic terms, agriculture and forestry represent&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fao.org\/namibia\/our-office\/namibia-at-a-glance\/en\"><u>3.7%<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;of the GDP, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). Fishing and affiliated add some 2.8% more to the economy. Onshore fish processing injects 0.15% while meat processing represents 0.5% of the GDP.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Is Namibia food secure?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In&nbsp;the October 2023-2024 period, some 840,000 people enjoyed food security, per the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nafsan.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/60565-VAA-Report-soft-copy-09.04.2024.pdf\"><u>Namibia Vulnerability Assessment and Analysis Report<\/u><\/a>. Around&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nafsan.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/60565-VAA-Report-soft-copy-09.04.2024.pdf\"><u>579,000 people<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;or 22% of the population suffered extreme food insecurity at least once in the July-September 2023 timeline. An&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.afrobarometer.org\/articles\/food-insecurity-on-the-rise-in-namibia-recent-afrobarometer-study-shows\/\"><u>Afro Barometer<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;study also found that 6 in 10 people went at least one time in 2023 without cooking fuel.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Which are the most sufficient foods in Namibia<\/strong>?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As of 2024, vegetable production had achieved a record&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.namibian.com.na\/food-self-sufficiency-hits-45-for-first-time-in-15-years\/\"><u>55%&nbsp;<\/u><\/a>sufficiency rate, the highest of any food group.
